Transmitting on GMRS or FRS with Ham License?
« on: August 06, 2021, 07:01:53 PM »

Is it legal or should a person holding a HAM license still has to apply for GMRS & FRS licenses separately if he/she would like to use those type of radios too?

FRS doesn't require a license, from what I know.  GMRS does have a license requirement and I believe you would need that license to transmit on GMRS frequencies. Your amateur license doesn't cover that band.

FRS has no licensing requirements but GMRS does as stated by others.  ALSO --- the radios for both services must be type approved by the FCC.  You cannot use a real ham radio (especially the older Bao-Feng units) for these bands

A "ham" license only confers you with privileges on the amateur bands.

Clearly that's not a question they ask on the current Extra Class license exam.  Maybe they should!

That type of info would be better suited for Technician Class study material.
And I think it was.

Sure, but what would it help other than preventing the community members to talk each other and exchange their wisdom and knowledge?

Don't know...I had this strange idea that a good citizen would "exchange their wisdom and knowledge" in accordance with FCC rules and regulations when it comes to radio communication.

The question has been asked and answered.  There's no need to turn this into a condemnation of the licensing system.

Sorry to admit that this good citizen didn't realize asking a question about a certain act being within the rules and regulations of FCC before acting on it was considered unreasonable by some ethics police!
Thank you for reminding me why I never warmed up to this hobby!

I have nothing against the current licensing system. It would be unreasonable to expect any exam to cover every regulation, and nuance.

The operator is responsible for their emissions. It's their responsibility to confirm band-plans and regulations.

Thank you.  Unfortunately, one of the things I've noticed in the ten years I've been licensed is that hams are a whiny lot, especially on internet forums.

More fun to whine in a forum than to whine alone. And then there are those that whine about the whining. Astonishing!

Does "spin the dial" come to mind? Or is your whining receiver rock bound?

Shave a crystal not an ego.
