Would be great if those wishing to pursue a stand-up comedy career would use the time to review the FCC rules and regulations and perhaps enjoy the ability to find an answer to their forum question.   But what fun would that be? :)

Is it legal or should a person holding a HAM license still has to apply for GMRS & FRS licenses separately if he/she would like to use those type of radios too?

You'll need to get the appropriate license, but you use the same FRN.  And don't forget to not use your ham call on that other service.

The question has been asked and answered.  There's no need to turn this into a condemnation of the licensing system.

Exactly.
Thank you for being a sane HAM with no superiority complex.
Unfortunately everybody is a critic nowadays!

It's not about superiority complexes.

It's about something every US ham should know - or should know how to look up.

and...it's "ham" - not "HAM". It's not a proper name nor an acronym.

It should probably be noted (maybe I missed it) that it's not legal to use a Ham transceiver on GMRS either.  GMRS radio needs to be type accepted and not capable of transmitting out of band.   Correct?

Yes, that is basically correct. The FCC no longer calls it type accepted but rather FCC certified. More recently, they stopped allowing mixed certifications. Generally speaking, all prior certifications are grandfathered so you can still used those mixed service transmitters such as combined GMRS and FRS transmitters.

I have both licenses. GMRS was my gateway drug into ham. Around my area, GMRS is very popular with the offroading crowd, which is what attracted me to it in the first place. But, GMRS is limited to 50 watts, and it has very defined frequency usage, making in not a lot of fun compared to amateur radio. There are a half dozen GMRS repeaters in my end of the state, but they are private and run by a club which requires membership.

It has already been mentioned that the CCRs are not legal for GMRS, but there are a slew of offroaders that are using them on the GMRS channels. I have also seen them used on GMRS by play warriors at the ranges.
