73s

He's a cartoon charterer so he's supposed to be funny. A real amateur would have done it the proper (& unfunny) way by sending 73.   :)

A "real amateur" like Hiram Percy Maxim?

Very cool Maxim QSL!

Notice that 1AW's QSL card says "Best 73's " at the lower right corner.  And we have seen countless debates over the years about whether this is the correct way to say it or not...  since 73 means best regards, then Best 73's is literally "best best regardses".

But since it happened nearly 98 years ago according to the postmark, it seems to me that it should be acceptable by now...

so Best 73's, Ed

Isn't 73's singular possessive, meaning that we are talking about something that belongs to the 73? (Like the ham's straight key)

Cheers,

Not necessarily. See item 3:

John,
You are right. In this case it is for the plural of numbers.

Cheers and thanks,
Bob

People might SAY "73s" on a voice mode, and they might WRITE "73s" on a QSL card, but has anyone ever, EVER, heard it sent that way on CW?

Of course not, on CW it's always 73 ...

Bart, as a real ham, is sending "EMS" repeatedly over other lids repeatedly sending "UP" on an active "DXCC Most Wanted" expedition frequency.

Don't believe Bart was sending CW, he appears to be an old time telegraph operator sending Morse Code via land line. (No radio, no tone)

As for 73 vs 73s, in my humble opinion it's 73. Every time this is brought up, someone always shows one of 1AWs cards. Maybe he used 73 over the air and 73s on his cards, or maybe the old man was a lid. Don't know, I wasn't around at the time. All I know is it sounds lidish to me to hear 73s over the air.
