Check the impedance on the Kenwood and see if it requires a low impedance mic element. The D-104 has a high impedance element if it has the original Rochelle crystal element.

I don't recall and don't have a TS-2000. My older 520s and 820s are ok with high impedance.

I have a feeling you are driving the radio with the wrong mic element.

Well....Is it a electret, ceramic?

Whats the impedance? If it's a direct replacement it is high impedance. Others have been low so as to use with "modern" radios favoring lower impedance.

You need to do a little homework and let us know.

If the element is not stock you don't know what you really have for audio response.
To begin, use the Menu button, turn to #21.
Use head phones in the front panel jack and turn on the audio monitor using FUNC and PWR BUTTON.
See what you can get from the radio TX Eq.
Then set mic gain to just hit ALC a bit on the signal meter using MIC button and adjust with the Multi/Chan control on the right side of the front panel, for that level.
If you still don't get what you want, it's time to replace the element or do some circuit work on the mike.
Menu 22 is TX band width. Be sure its 2.8 or 3000 hz for the widest audio.
Or get another mike like a Beringer XM8500 or equivalent for good audio.
Good luck.

The Kenwood TS2000 shipped with and REQUIRES a med-Z (500 ohms) dynamic microphone.  An electret or ceramic cartridge will not work with this transceiver.  A high-Z dynamic element will have very low transmit audio level.  K1KIM correctly analyzed the problem; the TS-2000 manual includes the specifications section.
The optional Kenwood MC-50 or MC-60 accessory desk mic packages which can be used with the TS-2000 have a dual-Z dynamic microphone assembly that is switched between 500 and 47k by rotating the 4 pin connector that plugs into the end of the mic housing.  Fully detailed in the manuals for those desk mic packages, which show up used on E-Bay.

I bought and installed the Heil kit to upgrade my D-104 to low impedance.  It works fine with my TS2000 and my Alinco DX-SR8t
