2 Meter Vertical Attic Installation
« on: September 14, 2021, 02:19:16 PM »

Posted in the wrong board.  Could't delete it.

Have a Diamond 2m/70cm dual band vertical antenna to be mounted in the attic. The antenna is 8+ft. in height. I have a very tall attic at the top ridge (10 ft.). There is a preformed rectangular box style heating/cooling duct which has a soft metallic covering running along the attic floor next to where I intend to mount the antenna.

How far above, if any, should I mount the antenna in order to keep the 3 radials above the duct? Or, does it even matter? Is farther the better or does it even matter?

Having the radials touching the duct may detune the antenna
somewhat on UHF, but you would have to try it to know for
sure.  It may be that touching just one radial isn't a problem.

Otherwise, do the best you can with what you have.  Obviously
there is a maximum amount that you can raise the base due
to the height of the roof, and I suspect you won't notice any
difference in performance anywhere in the available range.

I have a Diamond X50 in my attic.  I just hung it with string as didn’t really have a place to put a mounting pole or anything.  It’s a couple of feet from my heater unit.  In that setup it works quite well, so you may be able to experiment with how you mount or hang your antenna.
