CW program
« on: September 15, 2021, 06:13:25 PM »

Years ago there was a online program that would teach CW by using words that sounded like CW.   Anyone remember this ??
Looking to find this to have some fun with my grandkids

Is this what you were thinking of?
"The Rhythm of the Code."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_qQZ92onhU
According to some Morse experts, not the best way to learn the code.
Catchy tune, though.

That provided enough information for me to start Googling and I found two hits:
http://www.angelfire.com/in3/kb9tmp/MorseCode.html
http://www.zzickle.com/misc/morsecode.html

I also found two web sites selling this method as a way to learn Morse code!

This isn't a program but might be a fun video for your grand kids - the relevant part starts at 4:30:

The name of the system is called Code Quick, it's the same methodology used for teaching foreign languages.

It's not how _I_ learned Morse (in Scouts in the 60's) but my wife used it and got her Extra.  She was also a language instructor in graduate school.

Yeat its a break the ice sort of example that explains the sound of the character instead of counting dits and dahs.
Kids can learn rapidly as long as you can keep it interesting and often associate it at higher speeds much sooner than adults.
The morse mania app on android is neat as you can explore the charactors, it can quiz you on recognition, and has an actual ircc function in which you can chat online in morse.

Learn CW with the Code Quick method and I suspect you will have a hard time dropping that silly
trick and moving up in speed.

I used it because it was a fast way to pass the old 20wpm Extra exam.  These days I don’t see the point of using a method that slows your progression.  Head copy is out of the question when you have to perform two translations. Dah dit dit —-> dog did it —-> D

If I hadn’t been away from the bands for 20 years that crap would still be burned into my head, and slowing me down.

I’m not sure if I am supporting or not supporting using Code Quick.  I also used it when I wanted to get to 20wpm for Extra class (N9VKC in the USA)  I struggled going from 13 wpm to 20 wpm using the Gordon West Cassette tapes I had.  A couple of Months of Code Quick and I aced the 20wpm test.  Fast Forward (decades lol) to now and I use CW exclusively.  I’m not a speed demon but can easily copy 25-30 wpm and in contests I’m good for 35-40wpm.  Yes sometimes the jingles pop up especially over this past weekend with the CW contest and I was struggling to hear a call or two with all the QRM.  That said predominantly I have the call or word down before I hear any jingle in my head.  I used to tell people not to use Code Quick because it would hold them back, but then I think of myself and realise that I’m reasonably competent and often just hear the words not the individual letters sent so not sure that was the case with me.  As I get older I realise that it is important to encourage new people into the CW fold.  There are many ways to do this.  Records, Tapes, patient friends, g4fon, Morse Ninja, Code Quick, and probably many many others.  If it is the difference between someone learning the code and giving up I’ll support whatever method works for that new operator.
