Complete and total KAOS!
« on: September 22, 2021, 08:41:18 AM »

Our local radio club is new to the contest scene. We recently finished our emergency communications trailer and wanted to try it out during the “Ohio State Parks on the Air” contest this past Sept 11th. We downloaded the N1MM logger+ software and the latest updates. The first problem arose when we looked for the contest in the pull down index. It was not there. After some research we found it listed under “user defined” contest. We followed the instructions 100% and could not use it! We restarted N1MM and kept getting an error box. File xxx was not found in C:\Users\Useds\Documents\N1MM Logger+\SupportFiles folder.
The instructions for user defined contest say to put the file in My Documents/N1MM Logger+/UserDefinedContests. After numerous attempts (and the contest beginning) we gave up. We used a paper log for the contest. This contest will not accept paper logs. We decided to try the user defined templet again and after hours we got it working (we think). We ended up putting it into support files. We still have to click thru three or four error boxes to get to main logging screen.
When entering the info from the paper log to the program it shows current time and does not show me where I can enter frequency. We I went to N1MM web site to do some research on how to enter data after a contest I found this nice big red box in the After the contest, Editing Individual QSOs, entitled “Crackdown on Post-Contest Logging Changes”.
So am I allowed to transfer info from a paper log to the logger or not?
If I am allowed HOW do I do it AFTER the contest? The only boxes in the logger that I can change are the call sign box and the exchange.
Thanks for all your help.

If you are having such problems with N1MM  logger, maybe try something else?  Take a look at N3FJP's line of amateur radio logger programs. http://n3fjp.com/index.html

I thought you were going to rant about the contest itself.   POTA has turned into an absolute mosh pit...cesspool.   Try HAMRS logger.  Supposed to be great for POTA logs.

I use N1MM, have used it for several user defined contests in the past without problem, following the instructions here.

The instructions for OH PARKS say:

See the UDC file for more details

Filename: OH-Parks.udc – download/copy this file to your Documents\N1MM Logger+\UserDefinedContests folder

Section filename: OH-PARKS.sec – download/copy this file to your Documents\N1MM Logger+\SupportFiles folder.

The only contests I have worked so far have been Field Day, on and off for the past 20 years.  I always run 6m for a local club and only log with paper.  I can write and log faster than I can log on a computer so I have only ever used paper during the event.  Post event, I simply use a text editor and "import" my log into the Cabrillo format and send it to the club for inclusion into the aggrigate Field Day submission.  *IF* I were to purchase a logging program, which I may soon do, I'm looking really hard at N3FJP's software suite.

The only problem I have seen with POTA and FL-POTA is that they want their logs in ADIFF format, so will need to find a logging package that will do both.

That's why you make sure EVERYTHING is working 100% the day before.
And I learned that just like you did.
When our group contests, or I do it by myself, I/we get everything ready the day before and spend time operating as if contesting. Even adding a few contacts to the log. Just remember to delete them.
And stuff still goes wrong!

KAOS is an international organization of evil.

It's also a college radio station in Olympia, Washington.  But that's not important right now.

I installed HAMRS onto my android phone. It was $4.99 for the phones and tablets, but free for Windows computers. We shall see. It looks very simple, setup was a few seconds. Looks very easy and auto logs date and time and does lookup of station worked and puts that into the adif also.. simple export of .adi  file.   Looks good so far. Can't get much easier.  I wanted something I could inter with one hand and work mike or key with the other out in the field. It will also do field day and winter field day and SOTA as well as POTA.  Multi mode SSB CW and most digital modes.

Wouldn't using a Cabrillo-to-ADIFF converter still allow using paper logs plus a simple text editor?
