Digital Display for KWM-2A
« on: September 25, 2021, 01:39:18 PM »

I'm looking at a few options to add a digital display to a KWM-2A.  The ESP DD-103 seems to be the simplest solution.  I was also looking for the older Spectronics DD-1C, the version made specifically for Collins but I don't see any offers around.  Not sure how popular that was at the time, and perhaps it's not worth holding out for one to appear.  Any additional advice or thoughts are appreciated.  Thanks,
David

I'd been thinking about the eBay DFD for a 75S-3B receiver, despite the relatively high cost. The 75S-3B has the same conversion scheme as the KWM-2, together with relatively easy to intercept PTO and HFO outputs.  I like the idea of properly counting all three oscillators (HFO, PTO, BFO), rather than only counting the PTO and then applying per band and per mode offsets, which could change a little with time and temperature.  Counting the BFO frequency also allows USB/LSB selection to be displayed. The eBay unit is similar in principle to the old AADE counter and these notes may be useful in getting the BFO interface right:

I am using the DFD-103 with my KWM-2A and 75S-3C Collins. Just needed to set the offset and program each slot for each band. You can still find them on the Evil Place from time to time,

You may desire to look at Steven Leander, KV6O project,
originally for Kenwood DG-5 replacement in 2014.
It could be adopted for Collins KWM-2 transceiver.

Tim, KD8CN supposedly has a PIC-based solution,
but he does not have a web page for information or sales.
