Portable Operations Forum
« on: September 30, 2021, 07:10:35 PM »

Once again, I'll make a recommendation to start a new forum surrounding portable operations.  Parks on the Air or POTA has taken off like crazy and it would be a benefit to have a specific forum to discuss related topics.  So, how about it eHam?!?!

Sounds useful, to me, but are you proposing something just for QRP, or all portable operations.   For me, the inclusion of operating portable ARES station for practice drills, SET, etc. would be useful.

Portable power supply, portable antennas, outdoor operating, camping gear, logging for sota/pota, and portable computing all brought under one heading seems a good idea.

Sounds like a great idea!

I'm sure I could learn a lot from such a forum.

I suggested it last year to the forum moderator and it went no where.  I agree we could use it !

Would that include the mobile operator from bicycle to motor home?  You might also include the Rover category in VHF to microwave contests to swap ideas and experiences. I was a Rover on and off for over 40 years.

It sounds like everything mentioned could be covered in the "Mobile Ham" forum. That forum is not that active, so why not give it some use?

Parks on the Air or POTA has taken off like crazy

Leisure suits, 8 track tapes, AM ham radio & pet rocks were all popular at one time as well.

The "Mobile Ham" forum sounds like it is more for operating while in a motor vehicle/RV. A "Portable" forum would be more about operating stationary from various locations temporarily. Also using non-commercial power.

Why doesn't the forum manager just change the title to "SOTA/POTA/Mobile Operations"

Sorry, but I don't see the difference. Either one can be operated stationary from various locations temporarily. They all run on battery or generator and they all need antennas.

I'll bet no one would object if you posted to the "Mobile Ham" forum about SOTA, POTA, or any other portable operations and equipment. If you include POTA or SOTA or whatever, in the posts description, it would be readily searchable. Just make that forum what you want it to be. Maybe the admins will adjust the name to "Portable / Mobile Ham" or adjust the description to include SOTA and POTA.

My intent is strictly for portable operations, not from your vehicle.  You can use your vehicle to get there, but this is not a mobile discussion as there is a forum for that.  It would include POTA, SOTA, IOTA, etc., i.e. not from home or your vehicle.  You're not 'mobile" if your operating from a park bench, hill top, etc.

"Leisure suits, 8 track tapes, AM ham radio & pet rocks were all popular at one time as well" - brilliant observation....and there was spark gap one time too... Enough with the "negative waves Moriarty", you might not think it's a good idea, but the majority of those who posted did.  We should all support our fellow hams in their pursuit of fun and not belittle their ideas.
