Build Legacy Station
« on: October 12, 2021, 11:31:56 AM »

I needed a winter project top keep me busy during the long hard winter soon upon us.  I decided to recreate the Legacy SSTV Station
I had back in the 80's.  I really enjoyed SSTV, thought its changed quite lot since then.  The station will be IC-761, TL-922 amp, IBM PC
Computer (running Windows 3.1 floopy dish which I still have..Duh) and the Robot 1200C Scan Convertor.  I have everything except the TL-922 and Robot 1200C.  The TL-922 is easy to find.  The Robot 1200 search is turning into many dead end searches.

My memories of SSTV back then were that if you got even close to "their" frequency, you would get a load  of deliberate QRM from them. Totally illegal, totally against the 'ham' spirit and totally antisocial.......

Of course this led to people calling CQ on the SSTV frequency and stating listening 14 250 and up....leading to even   more deliberate QRM spread up the band....

The SSTVers deserved all they received, what a complete bunch of arrogant jerks the times I tuned in while tuning around.
I hope the 2021 version is an improvement.

The Robot 1200c seems to be like hens teeth. But there is a Robot 400 for sale on Ebay. It's untested except for power on.

If you upgrade your PC to Windows XP and then get a old copy of HRD (V5.xxx), you can go SSTV without any fuss. Just a little interface from the rig to the PC. I don't really use it, but I have an old Compaq Presario SR1230 NX, with a home brew interface, that's connected to my IC-735. It seems to decode SSTV pretty good.

I have an old Windows 3.1 laptop, with "floopy dish", that still works. I used it mainly for CW. I have a CW RX/TX program, that's written in C and runs in DOS. The interface to the rig is home brew and separate from the laptop. That PC also has a old version of MS Office, with MS Draw. The battery and charger blew out a long time ago, so it takes a bit to initially get it going.

Thanks for your Post.  Yes, the 1200c is like hens teeth to find, I have been on the hunt for a few months and nothing.  Then late last night, I tracked down a 1200c  in beautiful working condition with manual.  As we speak, the owner is getting it packed for shipping.  Thats half the battle.  This 1200c is totally OEM.  Once in hand, I need to find a Martin Emerson EPROM, hopefully his latest version before the Robot became a Boat Anchor.  The upgrade memory chips should not be to difficult to source.  Maybe a email to Martin Emerson could be helpful ?

The Robot 400 bring back memories, I had one when I first started in SSTV, My that 400 is old.

Thanks for the tip on HRD software !  Thinking back to the early 80's, I could not remember what software I ran,  my mind went blank  hi hi.  You mention you built a home brew interface.  Would you
be willing to share information on that interface ?  Thank You
