HY-Gain (MFJ) Unresponsive
« on: October 16, 2021, 07:40:09 AM »

I sent my  Hy-Gain YRC1 Universal Yaesu Rotor Controller to Hy-Gain, which is actually MFJ, on July 22.  Tracking said they received it on July 26.  They acknowledge that they did initial tests on it when I first contacted them a week later.  A month after that they said that the tech was really backed up and that's why I haven't heard anything.

Since then, I have contacted them numerous times and they are not even returning my emails.  I would think that ten weeks later I would at least have a repair estimate.

Does anyone know of another contact at MFJ that may be able to give me an update?

Thanks,

Steve, W6SDM

I recently made the mistake of buying a desk clock from MFJ. The segments are starting to fade one-by-one after only a couple of months. It was my own fault. I should have known better. It will be in the landfill soon.

First off there are plenty of ham small businesses that sell refurbished Hy Gain rotor and parts, you are qo times better off getting a refurbished job from one of these small businesses than by Hy Gain from MFJ. Since Hy Gain has been sold even there antenna parts are not manufactured to proper specs, there swaged elements ate not even close any more like when Hy Gain was Hy Gain plus there traps you have to take them apart and tighten everything back up plus they use the cheapest grade of SS hardware available so be prepared to replace all of it cause its pure junk. This is what happens to a good company that a large conglomerate buys up so be prepared to rebuild everything you buy from them.

Thanks.  I will give them a call.  It's much harder to ignore an email.

This is an older rotor controller.  It stopped communicating with the computer but everything else works fine.  I sent it to them hoping for an estimate to repair.  I understand being backed up.  What I don't understand is not communicating.

I only buy simple things from MFJ that I'm reasonably sure that I can repair myself, such as a manual tuner, antenna switches, etc.  When I wanted an auto tuner I went with a LDG for example.  I bought a used MFJ-9440 qrp transceiver and after a full alignment, it works great.  I don't hate MFJ, they build and sell lots of ham gear at a decent cost, but with that comes some short comings like shoddy QC.  There is no excuse for not responding to a communication though.  Overall I think they are an asset to the ham community and I would miss them if they ceased doing business.  Good luck to the OP.  Cheers.
