Newark used to MCM
« on: October 27, 2021, 07:18:41 PM »

I needed 2 types of harder to find of semiconductors and Newark had them both, indicated in stock, so I made up an order. On the website there are many mentions of 4 day shipping. So I made up a big order, enough to get free freight. Then I get a confirmation, parts of my order, my favored parts that are in stock won't begin to ship for a week.
They are good with large inventory, but I am think with a large company like they are they over burdened by the logistics of shipping so many items.

Newark always used to ship fast before COVID. So did MCM.
I suspect the real problem is that there is a shortage of truck drivers, because the govt sweetened and extended unemployment so much, people would rather not work when they can relax and collect free money. That problem should ease itself over time, I suspect. But these days, fast shipping is probably a pipe dream. Companies selling stuff are willing and probably able to ship fast. But how long the product will sit on a loading dock waiting for a truck is another matter entirely.

I needed a power supply a few weeks ago. DX Engineering had them. They promised to ship fast. I decided to drive over there (only about an hour drive) and do curbside (in the parking lot) pick up. Got it the same day that way.

Going way back to 80s.  I remember when MCM used to mail out a 6 or 8 page catalog.  they were always my goto place.

I supervised a lab for Siemens Corp for a few years. My signature was good for about $50k/year in today's money so I was on Newark's sales team's radar... I liked every supplier BUT Newark. I could place orders online except with them. Their stupid pushy sales people visited me with their catalogs in print and on a CD ad nauseum for what seemed like years. When they finally caught up to the industry with online ordering I had removed them so far from my list that they would need their own oxygen to pay me a visit...

Probably like MCM, the prices of Newark are probably pretty easy to beat.
N8AUC, sounds great, i wouldn't mind a drive to get something I needed, now the only parts place I used to go to, All electronics is closed on weekends. By the way I noticed last night, gas prices are up, $4.59 for regular in L.A.

Just paid $2.84 in the Midwest.

Love the weather, especially further south of LA, but would not live there for so many reasons.
I lived in Glendale near Burbank 50 years ago. Never again.

I am in Glendale, La Crescenta, My folks moved to Glendale about 50 yrs ago, it was sleepy town. Now its a bury place with a really bad pedestrian car accident rate. The houses have sky rocketed to insane prices, you might get a cracker box house for mid $500k  But there is plenty of work, Bmw, mercedes, lamborginis, I drive a chevy.
