What cable do I need to get to control this rig with the USB port on my laptop. If someone has a link (Amazon would be awesome) could you please post it?
 
I have HRD and I'd like to be able to control the rig with my laptop.

If it was me, I would order the one from Amazon. Simply because if it doesn't work, it is pretty easy to return things to Amazon.

Yes, many time the drivers that come with them aren't all they should be!
I never had one of these converters work with MS stock drivers yet, so you have to hope they did a good job with theirs.
However mine is about 5 years old. Maybe MS caught up to making drivers that work by now?

I bought the above cable from amazon and it doesn't work at all. I'm using HRD software and it won't read the frequency. UGH this is the second cable I've bought that doesn't work.

Did you load the manufacturer's driver that came with it according to their instructions?
You also have to set up the baud rate and handshaking properly.
The baud rate for the radio and HRD must match.
Use the auto function to discover the correct port.

just checked my settinggs for my FT450D.
The port may be different depending on your computer but the common settings would be:
 38400 baud with the RTS box checked. This works reliably for me.
I use vox to initiate transmissions.
