AirLink express EOL
« on: October 30, 2021, 09:43:24 PM »

I just saw where the AirLink Express digital program is now considered End of Life.  It will still be available for downloading but no more updates.  Author states drastic reduction of  users due to "other modes",  I interpret as FT modes.

Sorry to hear that although it's understandable. PSK31 usage has really dropped off in favor of the FT modes. Alex did a great job over the years and produced a really good product. Easy to use and it always worked perfect. Like Digipan before, I'm sure Airlink Express will continue to be used by PSK enthusiasts for a long time.

Just this morning, I worked a POTA station on 40 meters PSK31. That is rare and I almost forgot how to do it.

Maybe someday Alex will develop a simple program for the FT modes. But I'm sure some other digital mode will come along to replace what's popular now. Time marches on, I guess.

I was never a big PSK31 user, but AirLink Express was the best of the bunch for the mode.

I don't know enough about programming, but if the FT modes could be added, and somehow simplified/streamlined - again not sure if it's even possible - it would make AirLink Express an option for the FT modes.

I'm always reminded of the great work W4CQZ did to introduce hams to JT65, with his streamlined JT65-HF. This was before WSJT-X was released, there was only WSJT at the time.

Sorry to hear that.  I just got notice of an update when I started the program about 10 minutes ago.  Slightly off topic but has anyone else been getting a Trojan notice when trying to update PSK Express?  I enjoy operating PSK-31 it can wake you from your FT-8 trance.

I haven't seen a Trojan alert. Maybe I'm just too old but simple and streamlined works the best. Most products seem to suffer from "feature creep" but a lot of ops like all of that. JSCall just got WAY too complex for me. I guess I'm stuck in the Digipan era. I never could figure out not being able to lock the waterfall window to the operating window in WSJT-X. You really need both to work it. Yes, Airlink Express was/is just great.
