"Watching" the new SDR radios can teach the operator quite a bit about their rig.

This, of course, has nothing to do with the technical part of the question, but since childhood, listening to the radio, I closed my eyes. This was probably its magic. After the glowing filament of the tubes, of course. This atmosphere made it possible to get special pleasure while traveling on the air. Alas, the waterfall and the panorama do not make me feel anything.

Newer SDR radios with live waterfalls to chase down signals and watch audio etc such as on the IC-7300, 991A etc are lightyears ahead of my older rigs with so many features.

"Watching" the new SDR radios can teach the operator quite a bit about their rig. Of course RBI stats are optional  ;D ;D
I agree with that observation.  In the case of SDR, pictures are worth a thousand words.  The live, moving waterfalls and associated real time readouts are worth ten thousand words.  Older radio technology always brings out the nostalgia.  But the newer technology brings out understanding and performance.

No reason to do one or the other, do both!
I have passive splitters on the antenna to feed 3 receivers at the same time, the homebrew tube superhet, the Icom 7610 and an airspy hf plus discovery.
The airspy runs on a big monitor and gives a lot of detail and allows sideband selection, sync detection, drag and drop filter, etc.
Pick any old boat anchor receiver and bridge the sdr along with it.
Listen to the nice tube audio (on the older radios) and look at the sdr...

I like the way you think.  Go for all of it.  Much of the satisfaction is having choices, experiencing new tech, and using the gizmo that best fits the frequency and desired output.

NO...dont do it

you have no real need for sdr with the 7610

just download wfview
at
https://wfview.org/

will give you control over the 7610 as well as bigger panafall display

this is freeware
runs on PC and Mac's

i use it with 7300
and
can be used with 7610 too

I love SDR radios and I love experimenting with SDR radios. You stated that your main interest is contesting. This in addition to the fact your 7610 is already an SDR radio I would tell you NO. If you come to a point that your main interest is experimentation with SDR, then get  another SDR radio.

Also, there are different depths of SDR that you can purchase. With an Apache Labs Anan you can really get deep. The software is infinitely configurable. The software is developed and supported by volunteer programmers. The moment you think you have the software conquered, someone adds new features. You do have the option of adding that feature or not. This is what I like about that particular radio.
Do what you feel is best for you and that ,most likely, will be the right choice.

If you want to play with SDR software your 7610 outputs the I/Q data for your soundcard and can interface HDSDR and perhaps other software
