Transceiver Selection
« on: November 04, 2021, 06:18:52 PM »

I am wanting the lowest noise and clear SSB audio in a transceiver. Which would you pick? ICOM IC-7610, Yaesu FTDX-101D or Kenwood TS890S.

I haven’t tried the transceivers you mention, but I have an Elecraft K4D that sounds superb. They are made in the USA if that matters to you.

Depending on your expectations, and what type of noise you're talking about, none of them might satisfy you.

Atmospheric noise sir. All transceivers have noise, some are simply more quiet than others. I am seeking a quiet transceiver. The internet has no info on who makes a low noise transceiver. I guess most hams do not care, but with my somewhat poor hearing a low noise clear audio transceiver would make a difference. The best was TS-830S, but it failed and I want a new transceiver that sounds like the TS-830S. I hope I made my post more clear now.

Are you kidding?
I know of one who did just that, plus an IC-7851. He wasn’t satisfied with any of them and is considering a K4. I don’t know what he expects.

OK. Atmospheric noise varies greatly hour by hour, day by day, and band by band.  I think the only way you'll get a *qualified* answer is by someone who has all three side-by-side and switches back and forth under the same conditions. Even then, it's subjective to his own opinion, hearing frequency  response, and expectations. They're all great, state of the art radios. But for you to be satisfied, you should find a way to perform that scenario yourself. Under normal operating circumstances, I doubt if you could go wrong with any of them regarding noise level. Then it's a case of which one fits your criteria ergonomically and feature-wise. You might like the noise level on one over the others, but find out that everything else about it doesn't meet your operating style.

Lots of eham reviews mention the receiver being quiet or low noise for certain radios.  Some that come to mind are the Yaesu FTDX5000 and FTDX3000.

I get the minimum noise and the best sound on my old Icom IC-706mk2g when I leave the city with it)

Ears come first, operating style or layers of menus makes no difference to me.

The TS-890 gets the highest reviews here on eham. It's not even an SDR, it's an analog multiple conversion with DSP added at the lower IF

I posed same question at QRZ and a ham with poor ears stated the Yaesu FTDX-10 with the equalizer (superior to a IC-7610) and an outboard speaker worked for him. Others reported exceptional receive audio on eHam reviews. $2K less than the TS-890S, so I will give it a try. I do not use two receivers and the FTDX10 has basically the more expensive FTDX-101D receiver. Appears to be a good deal. My house is being built and will finish end of Dec. So, will order in December. Hopefully the FTDX-10 will be on sale for the first time as Ham sales are common in December.
