Scroll Problem
« on: November 08, 2021, 02:37:15 AM »

Hello,  just curious if anyone else has this problem that I have here on eham.
When I scroll on Forums with my iPad everything works and scrolls fine and normal. But, when I sign in and go to Forums and try to scroll up or down the page it will not scroll properly. It stops and acts like it is stuck and will not move or scroll. This only happens on Forums, only and only when I am signed in. I must touch, tap and play with it I order to move the page up or down.
Yes, I cleared casch and cookies a few times and reset the iPad. Again, this only happens on my iPad and only on Forums and only when signed in. The iPad is fairly new and has all updates and works and scrolls on all other web sights
Except for eham forums.
Strange problem, anyone else have this problem and what can be done to fix it.

Thanks and 73.

I've had the same problem on my iPhone for 2+ years now. No use complaining about it though because absolutely nothing has been (nor will be) done about it.

Yep and nobody in charge knows how to fix it, doesn't want to, or both.

Yes, I have the same issue, but I know why it does that and have a work around.

The forums run in the "frames". Frames have long been depreciated and there is no guarantee that a browser will handle "frames" properly. I use Chrome for all of my browsing.

I don't deal with anything on eHam except for the forums. So I log in directly to the forums and skip the rest of the site. When I connect to the forums, there is a small link that says "eHam" on the top-left of the forum frame. I right click on the link and select "Open link in new tab". This then opens only the forum and there are no more scrolling issues. Then I throw the other tab away.

I don't use a iPad, so I can't tell you how to implement the work around.

Luckley it only happens when I sign in. When I read the Fourms I don’t usually sign in at all. But if I want to write or make a comment I must sign in. That is when I can’t scroll.

The strange this is that it only does it on my new iPad mini and not the old one which is a mini also.

Same with Firefox and Chrome on Android.  It's a problem on all of my phones and tablets.  AFAIK, mobile browsers don't support frames at all.  I just deal with it and scroll slowly.

eHam is the only site that I visit regularly that still uses frames.  Frames have gone the way of Flash and RealPlayer.  None of the other message boards I use have frames, and they work just fine.

Just curious.. what are Frames ?
Is it just the border around the area that you are reading ?

I usually do my web surfing with Chrome on my laptop. I use the the trick I mentioned in my earlier post, which opens just the forum. This effectively takes the forum out of the frames mode and there are no scrolling issues. But I never tried it on a phone. So I did.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 phone with a Chrome browser. So I opened up the browser and went to eHam.net. I logged in and went to the forums. At the top of the forum list is yellow border that says eHam Forums on the left. Just above that is a small black link that simply says "eHam". If I press-and-hold that link, I get a menu. The top of the menu says something like "open in new tab in group". I select that menu item and then open the new tab. That tab now has just the forums, outside of the frames mode. I can scroll and zoom without any issues.

An extra bonus is that, my forum display doesn't have any advertisements.

I don't own anything with a "i" as the first letter of it's name. So for those with "iThings", your on your own. My sister-in-law has one of those "iThings". Maybe she will let me try it.

No, it is more than a simple border.

In the HTML Markup Language there is a structure that allows a web page to open another complete web page, but contained within a prescribed window, or frame area ("iframe"). Depending on the actual size of the framed web page, it may require extra scroll bars. This is where you start encountering scrolling issues.

"frameset" and "iframe" tags were part of HTML4 but do not exist as part of HTML5. But as long as you browser still supports HTML4, it will do it's best to render everything properly. Once a browser stops supporting HTML4, frames will no longer work. Web sites need to be continuously updated to keep up with the current state of HTML. Maybe it's time for eHam to upgrade?
