TYT - 7800 ? Thoughts for a shop radio
« on: November 14, 2021, 12:58:35 PM »

Anyone have an experience with this dual bander?  Was thinking of sticking one of these out in the shop on a ground plane for some of the local repeaters.

Price point is a lot better if it decides to grow feet then say a Yeasu, Icom or Kenwood.  One of the Ham Radio suppliers has a pretty good deal going on with a 30 amp PS bundled in.

Usually, when researching a particular radio, I start with the equipment review forums here on  eham: https://www.eham.net/reviews/view-product?id=12737

I have been using one for about 3 years and it serving me just fine.

Thanks Mike!

I did look at the reviews, some were good, some not so good. Appreciate the information, may pull the trigger on one and stick it out in the shop.

A local here has one, you can tell when he's on because his audio sucks (low/muffled) and there's what sounds like a PLL whine along with it.  Probably within 6 months the RX died which was the audio amp IC, then the UHF PA went high impedance and only puts out a fraction of a watt.  The only similarity to the Yaesu model is the numbers in the name, they're very different units and for the money there's no value in getting the TYT.
