I called BatteriesAmerica. They no longer have FNB38 batteries, and they won't.

Well, I threw the Tidradio/Baofeng on the back burner for a year. I got them out to play this week.
I was able to get the CH340 cable to work. I was able to design a load with local repeaters in it, and after downloading from the radio for reasons I cannot imagine I was able to upload to the radio, and that all seemed to work. I was able to bring up a couple of the local repeaters, a little.

I've been playing with it intermittently this week and somehow I got it into a weird mode where A and B are both a UHF channel that I cannot transmit on. MR mode does not seem to contain the channels I loaded last week and for some reason I can't find them, nor can I transmit on any frequency after manually programming on the keypad. So even though I entered a local repeater on the keyboard with the CTCSS the PTT has no effect, the transmit light never goes on. Huh? I just reset the whole thing and am going to load it again.

This is a little interesting. It seems Chirp has a problem with CSV files, even files saved in chirp.
Copying the needed frequency channels from the CSV file to the IMG file I had saved before allows upload and download freely with the CH340 cable.
You'd have thought as many people who are using Chirp that would have been brought up before.

I got the needed channels reloaded and can transmit on them now.

I'm not convinced by the AA battery trays - in all the examples I've come across, the radio cuts the output power heavily on AA cells and the battery life expectancy is poor. On my FT-1D, the power available is reduced to 0.8W maximum.

The problem is the higher internal resistance of alkaline
cells compared to NiMh or lithium:  they can’t deliver
as much current (assuming that the pack has the same
voltage).

If I need the higher power, then I use rechargeable NiMh
or single-use Eveready lithium AA cells instead.  But
most of my HTs are so old that they originally came
with NiCad batteries, and I don’t use them often enough
to keep the batteries charged and in good condition.
So I use AA battery packs on all of them.  Since I usually
operate on low power anyway (if I need more, I improve
my antenna) the lower power from alkalines isn’t an issue,
and I can grab a 72-pack at Costco to last me when I
can’t recharge the others.

Just don’t leave the alkalines in the case when not using
the radio.

A friend gave me a couple of AA holders for my Motorola XTS5000.  That thing holds 12 cells!  They say it's rated for 5000 mAH, though.
