Allied AX 190 Receiver
« on: November 20, 2021, 04:17:34 PM »

First I know this is not a popular nor a common receiver. It is just my present boat anchor project. The receiver was made in the first part of the 1970's. It was sold by Alliied Radio and Radio Shack. I am looking for a manual and / or a service manual or at least a diagram. Really any info will be appreciated.

After several hours I got it working. There is one problem.

First is the receiver is kinda deaf. On 80 and 40 meters it takes a 5 uV carrier from my HP 8640B signal generator just to be heard. It gets worse as I go to the higher bands. On an antenna I can hear a lot of signals on 80 and 40 and a few on 20 but not nearly as many as a similar receiver from the 1970's. I removed the wax from all the adjustments and I improved the sensitivity a little.

I saw a very old comment that the two "front end" transistors should be replaced by MRF 102's to improve sensitivity. Can anyone comment about this mod?

I know I am grabbing at straws but I decided to give it a try. Anybody out there has any info on this receiver? There are a few comments and pictures of this receiver on google. None on eham product reviews.

Thanks:

Hi Dick,

On mine, all the switches needed a very good cleaning with deoxit before they started working well again.  The signal can end up going through a lot them as there are many filtering options.

This pdf is a full collection of information on it:  http://radiopics.com/1.%20Manuals/Allied/Allied_SX-190-Info-Oct02.pdf

The MPF102 were the floor sweepings that did not fall into the pinch off voltage window of the  already listed 2N5484, 2N5485, 2N5486. They could work OK but without adjusting that voltage it was a crap shoot and a cheap Hammy Hambone favorite.
The originals were a cascade pair of 2SK19's and do not show up in any sub list I have

Swap them for J310s and put a 910-ohm gain-swamping resistor across the matching transformers. There are a couple of retrofit articles around the 'Net which detail this mod in place of 2SK125s in Icom receivers.

Thanks for the replies and the info. I plan to get the info that was offered.

After several days of cleaning contacts and adjusting transformers etc, I finally got the sensitivity down to 1uV on 80 and 40. A bit less on 20 and down to 5uV on 10 meters. I think this may be as good as it was when new, but I am not sure.

The audio is quite low, but maybe I need to replace the 6 or so electrolytic caps in the audio board. I checked ALL the resistors in the rig and they are all OK.

I plan to put it in the case and put it on the shelf with the other 65 boat anchor rigs that I restored.

This was a gift to me. I would never buy one but it was my last restore for a while.

Again thanks for all the info.

You do realize you need an SX-190 as a matching unit, right?

I'm fond of the FR-101 and R-820 - and each has its set of foibles. Both offer a bit of SWBC coverage in addition to the ham bands. I wish the Yaesu had the Kenwood's interference-fighting features, and I wish the Kenwood had all the coverage and features of the -101.

Nothing's perfect. Too bad a matching transmitter wasn't offered for the AX.

The NC-190 had Ham and SWL band spread dials and doesnt rely on obsolete SS.

The Knight T-150A would be a nice match to the SX-190 altho a bit older.

I rebuilt a SX-190 last year. Did a full electrolytic replacement. There are a few good mods to be done that do improve the radio. I have the whole set in one file. If anyone want it, just send an e-mail.

N2LXM - I would like to have a copy of your file on the AX (SX) 190 receiver. I looked around and I cannot find your email? How do I locate your email?
