Other transceivers like the Softrock
« on: November 20, 2021, 07:43:31 PM »

Are there other transceivers like the Softrock: using the computer soundcard to do the SDR computing?

Kits: Genesis G59/GPA10, RS-HFIQ, Avala SDR and various circuits from YU1LM, LMR SDR by YE3CIF, and tons of schematics from the simple to e.g. the FLEX-1500 that was a commercial product, too.

This is my version of a simple I/Q receiver (base) by YU1LM, the SDR2A if I remember well (that needs a sound card):

The price will be different based on the capabilities of the VFO (0 .. 4*f MHz), the quality of the operating amplifiers used, the mixer, which is mostly a Tayloe-mixer, you can look after it (but that will be cheap anyway), the number of bands you need (buying rings, switching over the bands), do you want to buy a kit or build an SDR with a transmitter as well, etc.

So, more input is needed about your requests/requirements.

I don't see anything other than Softrock that will run with SmartSDR, HDSDR, etc... I have a schematic for  the Avala, was going to build one a few years ago but life got in the way.

I certainly do understand the interest in homebrewing and have built many things myself but when it comes to SDR radios I find it hard to beat the SDRPlay lineup for the money. But of course they are receive only.....

Who can design a sdrplay with it's computing-in-a-gate-array and all? Tayloe is the one area where a homebrewer can make a very good radio. The Elecraft KX3 is a Tayloe design and was in the top 6 at one point on the Sherwood list so there is reason to believe that an amateur designer [Elecraft are not amateurs but the Tayloe circuitry is not too complex] could get on the air with a good rx... I want to just get something up and running then I want to experiment...

No, there are not. Given the high blocking dynamic range and the close in dynamic range and the price of the Softrock transceivers and the fact they can be easily controlled by excellent programs both under Linux and Windows, I am glad having them.
