Ever Do A Trade In At HRO?
« on: November 30, 2021, 09:12:04 AM »

I'm planning on trading in my Yaesu FT-450 with internal tuner at the new HRO in Orlando for a IC-7300.  I also have an Astron VS-35M power supply to trade in.  Everything works as it should.  What do you think would be a fair trade in value for the two?

I suspect any ham radio  business will not be giving you the trade in value you may be expecting.  They still have to process your trade-in and be able to sell it for a profit.   If you use the EHam Classifieds as a data source and search for sold FT-450 radios you should get a pretty good idea what they have been selling for on the used marked ...  but don't expect old listings to reflect current values, though.

I tried selling HRO (different location) a radio many years ago, and got what I thought was a low ball offer.

In fairness though, they need to make a profit and hope that equipment actually sells.

So just like what you see on “pawn stars”, expect an offer lower than it’s value.

You might be better off trying to sell it yourself.

HRO or any other retailer expects to make money on both ends of the transaction. If you want that extra money for the 450, then sell it yourself. You are probably looking at about $200 gain. If that is or is not worth it, only you can decide.

You can also use eBay and QRZ to compile some numbers.

Just remember, one sale does not make a market.

I have seen the same item go for 3x the price a week later on eBay. It all depends who is looking to buy at that moment in time.

Selling to a dealer ALWAYS will bring a lower price on anything. The store needs to cover expenses and then make a profit.

I have sold (traded) a number of radio and radio gear to HRO and others over the years.  Also, have sold (traded) a number of firearms to other stores.  Here is what my experience has been.

First, determine what the item would SELL for used. Look at HRO used equipment list and other places to arrive at an average price for what your equipment (in your condition) is being sold for.

Then, figure that HRO or other company will offer about 60% (50% to 70%) of that price. That allows them to take in, check condition, and resale and still make their markup to keep the lights on and the doors open.

As an example lets look a radio XYZ selling new for 800.  The used price would probably be about 600. And your trade in value somewhere between 300 - 420, with 360 being average.

You can always make more by selling it yourself. But then YOU need to advertise it, wait for someone to become interested, and meet your price. It sometimes takes a while for all that to transpire.

Selling it to HRO for less $$$ buys you speed (they buy it right away) and convenience.

Anyway, that's the view from Poquoson.

Pretty easy question.  Just look at Kelly Blue Book online.   You have what your car is worth and what the trade in value is.  Now to answer your direct question.... they may give you $300 for both.   You're miles ahead with selling it on Eham or QTH.   Stay off of ScamBay and that "other" place.

Here's my worry about doing a direct sale.  They get the rig, run FT-8 at 100 watts through the internal antenna tuner with a 3:1 swr and it burns up.  Then they complain the rig was defective and they want their money back.  Paypal always supports the buyer in that situation to my knowledge.  I've also read about parts pirates, who buy a transceiver, strip out the part they want and then return it, with Paypal's backing.

I wouldn't consider shipping a transceiver, a direct sale.

As a private party, I would only sell locally. Cash transaction.

That is all VERY possible. eBay is also notorious for siding with the buyer. NO MATTER WHAT.
You can state "for parts, broken, etc, etc" and the buyer will still get his or her refund and you are stuck with 2x shipping.

Anyone who has sold a lot of stuff on these sites with tell the same story. We've all been burned!

When a seller says they accept PayPal it tells me they are usually honest. But it does not protect them from dishonest "buyers"

Me, personally, I wouldn't give HRO the pleasure. Sell it yourself as many have suggested.

You never get what you feel you should on a trade in and if you use consignment, they will advertise it for you but take a cut once sold then too.  Likely best to use a swap board for something more current and desireable.  GL with whatever you do.
