ARRL 10 Meter Contest This Weekend Dec 11/12
« on: December 06, 2021, 04:49:22 AM »

The ARRL 10 Meter contest is happening this coming weekend, Dec 11-12th GMT.

The propagation forecast isn't great - this may be another year of the 10M contest being more like a VHF contest than an HF contest, but hope springs eternal.

The contest is both SSB and CW. For US/VE/XE stations, the exchange is RS(T) and state/province. DX stations send RS(T) and serial number.  Full rules here.

Even if the sunspots and solar storms don't cooperate, there are usually fun Es and meteor scatter openings in this one - often at odds times of day and night.

I saw a lot of spots on DXSummit for the contest from all over the country.  However, though I didn't try very hard, I only worked about 10-12 stations today (Saturday).  Using my bandscope to view the entire band, I could only see maybe 3-4 signals at a time, and sometimes when I came back and checked, I saw none.  There was a relatively short opening to Brazil.  In essence, the band was pretty dead.

I am in Colorado, near Denver (four of my QSO's were other Colorado stations).  Anyone have better luck?  It sure seemed like a lot of people were working a lot of stations, given the spots I saw.  I just wasn't hearing them.

I'm in Tucson and I was deaf as a post all weekend.  Can't work them if you can't hear them.

Here in Maryland, we had a short opening to EU on Saturday am - really loud signals from S5 and I, not much else was strong. Only lasted an hour or so - or at least for my all wire antenna farm.

Had a few nice sporadic openings - Saturday night at about 0400 I checked the band and Florida stations were 20 over 9, due to a strong front that was moving through the east coast.

Maybe next year will be the year this contest is more like an HF contest...

Rather quiet here in the Midwest.

I did make a nice contact with the Netherlands though. Otherwise the waterfall was flat on the vertical and the dipole.

Here in KH6 land we had okay openings to SA and the South Pacific. I worked 43 stations on CW with one being on the mainland.

Are you sure you guys were operating the ARRL 10 meter contest? Some USA guys were putting up a decent number of stations worked despite mediocre band conditions..

I got home from work at 6:15 PM local time and went QRV just as the band started to close. Darn work obligations. Used out club callsign of KH0W. I must have been "fresh meat" because I had a decent run going on until almost 7 PM when the band died. Worked 127 stations on CW in 48 minutes. Mostly JA's with a smattering of HS, VR2, HL, DU, BY, ZL & BV. The JA's were loud, really loud. Unfortunately my N1MM log got corrupted so I submitted it as a Checklog. I've had this problem a few times before.

Thanks to the fantastic operating habits of the JA's it's easy to maintain a good rate. In you are into contesting you really owe it to yourself to come to the Pacific/Asia area & run the JA's. It's a complete blast due to their absolute respect for other operators. For example...........A roaring JA pileup on CW is going on & I can only pick out the partial callsign of JG3. So I send JG3 and absolutely, equivalently the ENTIRE pileup stops and the only guy now sending his call is the JG3 station. I'm kinda jaded to this now after it happend for about the 300th time. If the Europeans (and some USA stations) subscribed to this style of operating peoples hourly rates would go thru the roof.

I was hoping to work HI for the contest but no luck here.  Saw a few spotted but not a peep.  Same for JA, AK and even EU!  I was able to work a ZL however.
