TS-480, flrig, fldigi
« on: December 12, 2021, 02:10:43 PM »

I've been inactive for a couple of years, and now I'm hooking up a TS-480 to a Fedora 35 machine with flrig and fldigi.  RTTY and PSK31 were working perfectly well except that the frequency display in fldigi wasn't reading the radio's frequency.  Everything was fine apart from that.

I should have been smart enough to just  keep entering the frequency by hand but I'm not.  fiddled around with things, finally added myself to the "dialout" group, and the frequency readout is fixed.  And running flrig (which I've never really used before) now works fine; controls the radio and vice versa.

Only problem is that the computer RY or PSK signal no longer flips the radio into transmit mode.   Weirdly enough, the "PTT" control on flrig works fine, kicks TX on and off ...  but the signal going to fldigi doesn't get transmitted.   I must be missing something simple but it isn't simple enough for me to figure it out.  Does anybody recognize what's  up?  Menu setting, config setting, that I need to change?   TIA!   --ken ac4rd

This may help ::  https://sourceforge.net/p/fldigi/wiki/how_to/

Ed, as the young folks say these days, "You da man!" :-)  Thanks--I knew it must be something simple!  This has helped, and NOW the problem is 93% fixed!

Almost everything works fine now.   EXCEPT: after a "TESTING AC4RD" test transmission, the transmit locks ON, in transmit mode, and I get a message saying "sorry!  flrig has crashed!"

You know when I had the very most fun and least frustration as a ham?  In 1991 I was a brand-new Tech with an incredibly junky old Heathkit.  I spent 98% of my time on 15m cw, pausing occasionally to pound on my Griefkit and curse, and working all those new countries was the MOST fun I have ever had as a ham.  I miss those days.  :-/

tnx agn and 73!  --ken

Its finally working right now--thanks again for the help, Ed!   I knew it was 93% right.  I wound up removing and reinstalling fldigi and flrig.  Which didn't work.  So I removed fldig and flrig AND deleted the hidden subdirs with the configuration data.  Then a clean install and it all worked without any diddling around.

Interestingly, I had tried this with two different cables between the PC and the radio.  One was the official RT USB-63, and one was a plain serial cable (straight-through with female on both ends) with a cheap generic USB-to-serial adapter.  The system works perfectly with the generic adapter and I'm not touching it now that  it's working.  :-)  TNX 73!   --ken
