Antenna setup in Portland, Oregon
« on: December 15, 2021, 05:59:07 PM »

I've moved to Portland, Oregon and would like to get back on the air. Does anyone know of a company in the area  that  might consider installing my antennas?  I have a Buckmaster 4-band OCF dipole that's 68 feet long, and a Diamond X-50 vertical for VHF. I've contacted several companies, but they only do commercial projects or tower installations. I know that there are tree service companies, but I was hoping to find a business that is knowledgeable about antennas (bringing coax into the house, cutting/crimping coax to the right length, setting the dipole up so that it can be lowered, etc.).

Just curious and did a quick Google...  perhaps contact the Portland Amateur Radio Club?  Looks like a contact email of w7lt@arrl.net.    I'm sure they would have advice on who does that type of work.

You could Try making a call to HRO  in Portland and see if they have any info on companies but my feeling is they probably won't be of much help.

After living in the Willamette Valley south of Portland for 11 years I have never had any help from any club doing my antenna work but I have 2 big strong kids that help me out when they come back to visit me a couple of times a year.

GRUMPY2021 - I have been in contact with PARC and joined the club. They provided some suggested contacts, but none has panned out.  Dave -- WB6DNL

WB8VCL -- My first stop was HRO in Tigard (Portland).  They gave me the business card of a ham who does "antenna and tower work." He never returned my call.  -- Dave WB6DNL

https://www.eham.net/reviews/view-category?id=73&sort=-lastrev
Eham has reviews of tower installers--this should be a list in reverse chronological order.
I've heard that some companies will travel around the country.  If you are on a tight budget you can wait until they are in  your area.
Or pay them to come right out if you need it done now.

What needs to be done?

What supports do you have?

If it is just a matter of throwing a rope up in a tree
and mounting the vertical on a short mast, it might
be time for an antenna party.  That’s how we used
to do it:  invite some club members over to put it
up in exchange for pizza, and get the benefit of
their expertise and test equipment.

You might check out OTVARC (Oregon Tualatin Valley
ARC, www.otvarc.org).  This is their usual meeting
night, but I don’t know if they are meeting.  They
typically have an Elmer’s Table starting at 6 pm.
They meet at Sunset Presbyterian Church - take
26 West to Bethany, turn right, and the entrance is
about where the road narrows to one lane.  Go
around the parking lot to the left to the entrance.
(But check their web site first.)

Otherwise, drop me an email using my call at
A double  R L dot net and I’ll see what I can do.

W1VT - Thanks for the link. Just yesterday I spoke with one of the people listed--Paul Nyland of Custom Metal Works. He is a very nice guy, but only does tower-type work. -- Dave, WB6DNL
