Omni Rig Setup
« on: December 20, 2021, 03:49:30 PM »

I am new to SDRs and am trying to set up an Afedri SDR with my Kenwood TS-850, with my primary objective to have a panadapter. It's all physically connected through a MFJ 1708B-SDR switch and I have a CAT cable connected to the ACC1 on the back of the rig, and the USB end to my desktop. I downloaded OmniRig Ver. 2 and noticed that the TS850 isn't listed, but the TS870 is. Can I select the 870 and will it work? I'm having some difficulty setting up the various parameters as I'm only basically computer savvy and I'll have to figure these out after I get this question answered. Could any of you pros give this old ham some help? 73, Dennis W5ALJ

Hi Dennis,

I don't know how to insert a picture here, but I can tell you my settings for OmniRig.

You are correct, the TS850 isn't listed, but Kenwood is. Use that setting.

I use COM port 4, that will be unique to your set up
Baud rate 4800.  This is fixed in the TS850
Data bits 8
Stop bits 2
RTS high
DTR high
Poll int. 100ms
Timeout 4000ms

Personally I use HDSDR for my panadapter. You will not need the MFJ SDR switch.

On the back of the 850 is an IF OUT jack. This is an 8.83 MHz 2nd IF signal. If you want a wider bandwidth on the panadapter display, it is a very simple procedure to switch the IF OUT to the 1st IF at 73.050 MHz. This will provide a much wider bandwidth.

To convert the IF OUT, you remove the bottom cover and follow the coax cable beside the IF OUT jack. If is the one in the top right of the RF UNIT that is permanently connected to the board. The other end goes to a TMP connector just above L81. There is an empty TMP connector (CN4) right beside it. Unplug the cable and plug it into CN5 (TP1) on the left side of the board, right above L60, L61 and L62. It is labeled 73.05 RX IF. This is the first IF test point. You can use this signal to feed the SDR receive for a panadapter display. As it is only an RX signal, it shuts off when you transmit. And there is no RF output going to this point.

Any other questions, let me know.

Many thanks Max!! This is invaluable information and is much appreciated. I really needed the settings and this gives me a great start! I just might need more of your knowledge.
