For the life of me I could not figure out why anyone would want to create a PolyChlorinated Biphenyl.  Yes I knew some people in the old days would fill their Heathkit Cantenna with the old transformer oil which contains PCB's, and was a more effective heat dissipater than the Mineral Oil we use nowadays. So I was a bit surprised when I came here and you all were all talking about Printed Circuit Boards.  :)

James,
Every once in a while an "elder" in this field finds that he'd like to do some ham work that he'd done 25 or 30 years ago. I would like to go there again before it's "too late". (Just an itch that needs scratching.) LOL

James,
"PolyChlorinated Biphenyl" - "Printed Circuit Board"
I'm probably out in left field somewhere, but are they the same thing? :-[

You can still purchase the etch resist rub transfer patterns.

Glenn,

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.  In the early '80s, I used Bishop dry transfers and placed them on plain paper.  After completion, the paper was photocopied.  What I don't recall is if a negative of the image was required when placing on top of photo-resist copper.  Results varied, but overall, it worked well.

Thinking back, more money was spent on etching and dry transfer supplies than the low cost of today's Gerber file transfer to China.  Most of my PCBs are USD $2 for five boards.  Shipping costs more than the boards.  Unless I'm in a rush, JLCPB will ship to the U.S. for about $5.  So, it's still under $10 for five high quality boards.

Paul,

When I was a young engineering manager, we were laying out boards on mylar at 2x and 4x scale using adhesive patterns and tape. We could stack the films to check everything. These went to the photo lab to be reduced in negative form and the PCB company took it from there. Special hole sizes or via requirements were manually noted. My how we have progressed.

I agree with the speed and economy of using a fast PCB house to produce prototype and even production boards. Some of their website checking and quoting tools are amazing. We used KiCAD for all of our schematic capture and board routing work. It is well supported and we never had a problem with the PCB houses.

I use kiCad (one of the great things, is that it's cross platform.. so all my kiCAD files I made in Windows 10, followed me to Linux Mint with no issues)

then i simply upload the KiCad files to a pcb manufacturer, the one I use, has a minimum of 3 boards, which I don't really mind because it's always nice to have a spare.. and within about 10 days to two weeks, I have 3 brand new PCB's on my bench ready for components!! beats making them by hand if you ask me!

this is a 3d rendering that kiCAD can do.. of one my current projects.

I assume there are a few KiCad users here, and maybe some who are ex-Eagle 7.5pro users?
