I'd like to run wheelbarrow portable, but the owners manual says the front tire need to be rotated first

All kidding aside, I think this is a great idea and should be a lot of fun. Once the weather warms up, I can see doing this on many weekends.

It would be like Field Day 2020, when you had to operate from home due to COVID. That turned out to be a lot more fun than I thought it would, and a lot less work too. Took a rig, the battery box, deployed the solar panels in the back yard, and played radio under the car port roof.

Field Day food that year was door dash delivery from the local Firehouse Subs which was not bad at all! Got to sleep in my own bed, too!

But sitting outside trying to play radio, in northern Ohio, in the winter, doesn't sound like something I'd want to do voluntarily. Most of the time, my wintertime outdoor activity is pretty much just going out to run the snowblower.

You absolutely did not HAVE to operate from home for FD2020.

Walmarts On The Air!  Bonus points for operating from a 24 hour Walmart and if it's just prior to a holiday your score gets marked down.

You absolutely did not HAVE to operate from home for FD2020.

Maybe not where you live.

True, there was nothing in the official Field Day rules that said you HAD to operate from home.

But around here, during 2020, none of the park districts would approve the permits needed for overnight operations. They cited COVID and social distancing requirements as their rationale, and they had a State Health Department ruling backing them up. Private campgrounds were closed, and the State Parks weren't issuing camping permits, for the same reasons.

You either operated from your yard, or someone else's yard, or it didn't happen. So each person in the club operated from their own homes (either indoors or outdoors), and we aggregated our scores under the club call sign.

Overnight operations are not required. Local parks, private campgrounds, and state parks are such a tiny subset of locations a ham can operate from. Did anyone in your club even try?

I live in one of the LEAST free states in the country (check out https://www.freedominthe50states.org/ for fun) and I camped, operated, drank beer, and enjoyed the hell out of FD.

Same goes for WFD 2021: camped, operated, drank beer, froze, still enjoyed myself.

Even in a small state like Ohio there are tons of places to go if you actually want to operate in the field.

Neat idea Mark!

A great idea to take some of the (sometimes ugly) competitiveness away from ham radio and put some of the fun back into operating. Think about sitting on your deck or in your yard have a frosty mug of a refreshing beverage and making contacts.

I honestly can see no downside to this idea.  Let's make it happen.

How about staying on topic guys....   your FD operation in Ohio is an entirely different topic.
