Recommendation desired
« on: December 30, 2021, 09:03:31 AM »

Hi all: Looking for a recommendation based on personal experience for a swl receiver in the 100 to 200 dollar range. Tube type. Would like to have an SP600 or R390 but since this is just a "whim" and do not really need one those are to much $. Inputs based on ACTUAL USE/OWNERSHIP would be appreciated.

Have a good and safe New Year. 73's David w7cxc

I had an SP600-JX17 and it was an absolutely fabulous receiver.  What I liked about it over the R390 is the ability to just turn the dial and "scan" for a station.

Based on your price range I'd suggest something from the Hammarlund HQ series like an HQ-180 or something similar if you can find it.  The biggest downside to something like you're looking for is whatever it is, it will be a beast to ship so you definitely need to look local or at a big hamfest like Dayton, Orlando or Huntsville.

Good Luck!

I have a Hammarlund HQ-140-X and it is a great receiver. If frequency stability on SSB & CW is a concern for you, then the HQ-129, HQ-140 are the ones to buy. Newer models in the Hammarlund lineup are drifty. Other nice things about these are that they are easy to service, well built, good dial accuracy, and generally do not need to be recapped except for the power supply filter capacitor because there are no paper nor wax capacitors. Also no special capacitors inside of the IF transformers so no worry about the so-called silver mica disease.

The one which I have here is very sensitive and keeps up easily with my more modern receivers.

The only problem these days with these big, old heavy receivers if you buy online is shipping cost. Shipping prices have gone way out of reason for bigger items.....

Thanks for the inputs. Will look for a HQXXX. The first novice station was a DX20 and HQ110 in the mid 50's. Always liked the 110. Thanks again. David
