IC-7300 and HRD
« on: December 31, 2021, 07:18:10 AM »

I'm looking for a good reliable logging software to use with my 7300. I'm looking at HRD but see that it requires a panadapter cable (if I read that correctly).  The 7300 manual says USB is all I need for control.  Before I plop down $100 I would like to know if HRD is the right fit or should I be looking for something else.  I have been away from operating for quite some time, last rig was FT-950 so i am not sure what a panadapter is.

Or you can just get Win4Icom. I believe it sells for about $50 and will display your panadapter on a computer with the USB cable.  I used both HRD and Win4Icom with the several 7300s I have owned and continue to use both with my IC 7610.  You get more options for different modes and other uses with HRD and you get a super control program and Panadapter with Win4Icom.  Frankly, I would buy both (since I did)

I use HRD with my IC-7300 and they work fine together.  Only requires a USB cable between the radio and computer.  However, HRD isn't cheap and if all you're looking for is a logging program you might look elsewhere.  I like HRD because I use it for rig control, digital (PSK 31, RTTY, etc) and for logging.

HRD can be cheap; free in fact:

thanks for all the replies. I sent an email to support and downloaded the 30 free trial but can't get it to connect. thanks for the link K1FBI, I will differently consider that if HRD does not have a good solution and will look at the win4Icom

Log4om is more or less free. They request a donation after you have installed it and used it for a while. It is much more than just a logging program of course.

I used HRD (older free version) for many years with various rigs including the 7300 it works well. on the free version you have to "fudge" just a little on the rig control as the free version was out of date before the 7300 was introduced. You can use a 7700 data set.

I use N1MM for most logging and have that feed the DXkeeper log thru a gateway. Both are free. Neither are particularly easy to set up make work. But it ain't no hill for a stepper as us hillbillies say.

I will confirm all you need for an "interface" is a simple USB cable A to B.  The B side goes to the 7300 and the A side plugs into the PC. There are plenty of other logging programs too. "Ain't no thang" to interface to any of them. If us hillbillies out here in the sticks can do it, anyone can do it.  :)

Got an answer back from HRD they say to download the Icom driver and it will work with the USB and the 7300 settings. I think installing the driver is a whole new set of issues for me.

I already "plopped down the $100" some time ago for the lifetime license with free updates. So far HRD has never failed to interface with any rig I tried with it, including the FTdx10.

You will not find a better software suite like HRD for $100, IMO.

Simply download the driver. Unhook the USB cable from the rig to the computer. Then install the driver, it is straight forward.
Once it is installed turn the rig off, connect the USB cable back up.
Bring up HRD and go to CONNECT and let the software find the comm port. Just make sure you have the CAT BAUD RATE set the same as you have it in the radio's menus.

I have used HRD for 15 years, and have the paid version. I do all my logging with it, and use the digital software included with it all the time. I have the logging software set up to upload to EQSL, Club Log, QRZ automatically. I can also upload to LOTW. I can download EQSL and LOTW confirmations.

IMO if you operate a lot it is well worth the money.
