Why....?
« on: January 01, 2022, 08:40:26 AM »

....Do classifieds' sellers insult our intelligence by posting ads like.."Brand new. Just opened the box to verify contents". Or..."NIB. Just took it out of the box to take the picture". Or maybe..."New in sealed carton. Not gonna open it up". Then just show a picture of the "sealed" box. Maybe the uninformed wife saw it, and threatened divorce if he didn't immediately get rid of it ;)? But you look him up on qrz.com and there it is on his desk, all hooked up. Just sayin'....

Happy New Year!

Well, there are legitimate sellers who do sometimes sell something brand new. I once sold a brand new in the box unopened Icom IC-7200 because I had bought two of them for a remote project which didn't pan out. I didn't open it and only took a pic of the box. My buyer took a chance and got a good deal. It does happen sometimes.....

Duly noted. I've just been seeing a lot of these ads lately, and wonder.

The "WANTED" ads can be even more problematic for the poster with all the scammers that cruise those ads on all the sites and then respond.

I have posted 2 ads "Looking For" and both times I got the infamous "I take friends and family payment" after dubious names and call signs.

I won't post type ads again.

All good points.  I posted a wanted ad over on QRZ.com yesterday for a mic and external speaker for an IC-756 ProII.  Someone answered a couple of hours later and he had both for sale.  After a little negotiation.  we settled on a price.  Of course he wants a friends and family payment, which means I get no buyer protection and he scams PayPal.  His call sign appears legit and there are no complaints about him, but I have to wonder if this is luck, coincidence, or a scammer.  I haven't sent him the payment yet and I've already received one "are you there?" email.  He may be totally above board but I will suggest that he invoices me instead.  The shipping discount he'll get will offset the PayPal fee and I'll have protection.  If he refuses, I'll decline the deal.  There will be others out there.

I have a WANTED ad for a 6M all mode transceiver on QRZ.
I have PAYPAL ONLY NO F&F

Maybe there are no radios available, but I think I eliminate a lot of responses but the only way that I’ll pay

An update - I asked him to invoice me and mentioned that he'll get a shipping discount through PayPal and I said that I would reimburse him any difference between the fee and the discount.  He declined, so that makes me think that he either doesn't understand or is a scammer.

I have done hundreds of purchases and payments through PayPal and have never been ripped off.
There's no need for that to happen now.  There will be other speakers and mics out there.  I can wait as long as it takes.

A while back I bought a used MFJ-4225 from a ham in Florida who described here on eHam the supply as being near new in condition......well, when I got the supply both meter LED's were out and when I opened the supply up there was a thick layer of dirt and dust covering everything inside the supply.

I emailed the ham back pointing out this supply was anything but near new....I blame myself for being suckered into this POS. The supply does work and I've replaced the LED's and cleaned the dirt.

Buyer beware.....

It is generally better to point out what he would be charged by PP for a standard goods and services sale without generating an invoice (2.89% plus $0.49). You then "gross up" your payment to make him whole. The gross up math in this example is divide the sales price by 0.9711 and then add $0.51. So if the buyer wanted $50, you would pay him $52.00.

PP would do themselves a favor if they offered a simple "make me whole" calculator for the merchants. The merchant puts in what they want to "net" and the calculator shows them what they should charge using standard PP. It is my opinion, however, that the F&F feature is now being used to avoid the 1099 reporting and potential sales tax liability.

Well, that could be described as MFJ new...

That’s the reason I don’t buy or sell anything on the internet. If I can’t see it first I don’t buy it. I have never been ripped off that way.

No doubt some are faking item is new, never used. Mostly CBers do this. An example was a CB radio and not only did not have some accessories and the mic in plastic sleave, the hand mic holder was mounted on the radio.

Most private sellers have no idea how to properly list and describe an item for sale. I follow my gut instincts, if it doesn't feel right, I don't buy it. I've bought a ton of stuff in my lifetime on the internet, haven't been burned yet. Also sold quite a bit with zero complaints. It's all in the communication.

Internet buying isn't all bad. I've never - yet (knock on wood) - been stiffed in 20+ years of online trading. But, I only buy from well established & reputable sellers and avoid anything which looks like too good of a deal.....
