Nice Opening on 6-Meters
« on: January 03, 2022, 09:45:17 PM »

I've been watching 6-meter openings more or less in the eastern portion of the country for a couple of days.  Today was our turn.

At my location in Louisiana, it was open from about 23:30 UTC (01/03/22) until about 03:30 UTC (01/04/22), perhaps a little longer.  I work mostly CW and no digital.  DX Maps was awash in digital signals, but a few hardy souls got on CW ;D.

I heard beacons from Florida to Texas and up to Toronto.

Six meters was also very active from central Texas (grid EM11) and I worked about 40 stations in a row using FT8.  The background noise levels would rise and fall in a wave-like pattern from my QTH from noisy to almost full quieting.  Both my hex beam and and a 4 el. loop fed yagi at 400 watts seemed to work equally well.  I need four remaining states for six meter WAS (AK, DE, RI, and VT) but didn't see any activity from the three NE states.

Big antenna's, 400 watts using FT8 = not impressed.

When I could make an SSB phone contact 800 miles away using a dipole at 9 feet and 10 watts of power, now that was a 6 meter opening.

When I worked 9 countries with a multi-band vertical and 100 watts of power, that was a 6 meter opening.

I'm impressed with anyone who gets WAS on 6M with any combination of modes.
I used FT8 to work and confirm number 48 DE.  I still need AK and HI to finish my 6M WAS.
Where I live, a 4 element Yagi works a lot better than a 2el Yagi when working European openings.
The pileups on Europeans can be very hard to get through, especially when the band is also open from Europe to the greater Boston area.

I'd also be impressed if you got on the air with a homebrew 6 meter rig that you built yourself.

Very glad FT-8 gave you a reason to be impressed with yourself.
Good luck with Alaska and Hawaii.
