Collins S line trim ring
« on: January 14, 2022, 02:24:52 PM »

Will a trim ring from a KWM-2 fit a 32S3? I am assuming they are all the same? Thanks Mike

My hunch is No.  The cabinets are not the exact same size, I think.

Mike,

The basic trim rings are all interchangeable but there are are some minor finishing differences in the KWM2 ring, as I recall.  For example, as far as I know all the KWM series had the quick-lock fasteners for the cabinet lid and the associated holes in the trim ring.  The 32S-3, or at least my own and the ones I'm familiar with, do not have the lid fasteners.  But apart from the extra invisible holes, you should be able to swap the the KWM ring into the 32S-3.  A fair amount of Collins trim swapping goes on across the S-line, if only to replace yellowing plastic trims in later equipment with the metal rings from earlier radios. There are treatments available to restore the plastic if you're keen but I prefer the metal rings.

Thanks for the replies. I had hoped it would work. The one on my radio I just purchased has a few to many chips in it from sliding the radio in and out. I am going to replace it and have the original bead blasted and repaint. I need to obtain the correct paint to match. Thanks again. Mike

Mike,

The Sherwin-Williams paint formulae compiled by Glen Zook (K9STH, SK) might save you some time.

See: http://www.radiomanual.info/schemi/Surplus_Handbooks/Boat_anchor_paints_K9STH_2010.pdf

Thanks, I was going to ask that question. Hopefully they can put that in a small spray can. Mike

Mike,

If you want a spray pack, Surplus Sales of Nebraska might be a good starting point:

Unfortunately, the paint cans can't be shipped internationally so I have no direct experience of the products.  However, I've read good reports from US collectors.
