Kenwood TS-820 w/ Digital Frequency Display
« on: January 17, 2022, 07:36:02 AM »

I have a Kenwood TS-820 (not S) for many years that has a digital frequency display. It appears that the face plate has the cut out for it on both the 820 and 820S models, but just not installed at the factory for the 820.

From what I understand, there was a part #X54-1310-00 available for aftermarket installation years ago.

Is this what I am to assume was done, or did Kenwood put the wrong name plate on the face plate?

Curious.

TS-820 was analog readout only, but had the cutout for the display tube which came with the "DG-1" kit. I think it was badged as such.

TS-820S had the digital readout standard from the factory and was badged as an "S".

I have a DG-5 that I use with my TS-520s. It is a separate stand alone unit. I didn't know that the DG-1 was a add on kit as opposed to the part number I mentioned in my OP.

Way back when the 820 first hit the market they came in stock at Harrison Radio back then as TS-820 and they sold the DG1  separately until the "S " model came in. I bought the 820 and a few months later bought the DC1, they were the same except for the factory installed display which most ham's back then worth there salt could install along with the optional CW filters, there were no stinking plug in filters back then, we also wired our own mic convectors.

The TS-520 optional add-on DG-5 digital display was an external box, connected via rca cables. The 520S had the rca jacks built-in to the radio, while the older 520 required a kit to add the rca jacks.

As has been mentioned the difference between the 820 and 820S was whether the DG-1A digital display was an option add-on kit or built in, and the front panel model number badge was different.
