ONN Laptop w/n boot up
« on: January 23, 2022, 08:48:13 AM »

I have an ONN laptop/tablet w/ 10" screen that is about 1 year old.  I do not use it regularly as it is for Winlink ARES exercises in the field.  It has performed very well in that time.   I had a problem with it yesterday in which, during an exercise, I received a battery low warning as it had not been used in a few months. It stated battery at 10%, 1/2 hr remaining. Shortly after, the computer shut down. I plugged its supply in and attempted to revive it without success. After some time, pressing the on button would show a battery low symbol and it would just turn off.    It has now been charging for more than 24 hours but will still not boot up nor will the screen even light with a battery indication. I checked the power supply and it is putting out the required 5 volts at the connector. Can you offer any advice?   Is there a removable battery and if so, how is it removed?   I tried searching the web for information but came up dry. I see various batteries for ONN but no information on how to exchange.   Is there possibly an on board coin cell that has run down?
Thanks for any suggestions. 73, Jim   KD1I

Since I see there are no replies I thought I'd offer something. Doing a little research I found that this is apparently not unheard of. One site mentioned that after running the battery down some tablets will not respond, even after recharge. The two directions I found were a "factory reset" which apparently is performed by holding down both the on/off button and the volume down button. It said to hold both down for about 20 seconds and then release the power button first. The problem I see with this is: you would likely lose info stored on the tablet as it resets to factory specs. Second: there is a battery. You would have to remove the back of the tablet with a plastic tool (I have a kit for computer repair and these look like fancy guitar picks). That allows access to the battery which can be replaced. Hope this is helpful.

Doc, thank you for the reply.  This ONN has a detachable keyboard. There are no external volume buttons. The only external button is the 'ON' button.   I have searched many sites on the web but nothing looks exactly like this one. it really is (was) a very nice little computer, especially for the money.  I suppose I could try to pry the back off with a guitar pick as you suggest.  If it won't boot up then my data is lost anyway. Truthfully, there is no valuable data as I used it primarily for Winlink in the field. I'm thinking the internal battery will no longer hold a charge or the internal connections are damaged and won't permit the battery to charge. Thanks again,   Jim

Did you try holding the power button down until it vibrates and does a hard reset?

Hi,

I would guess that the internal battery is gone.  Likely there is some continuous drain on the battery for the clock, quick wake up, etc. which slowly drains the battery when it is not in use.  If it was stored away without a good charge on it, the battery may have dropped too low in voltage and is not recoverable.  This is generally why laptop batteries go out too.

I would pop it open to access the battery and you should be able to find a replacement on Amazon/eBay/etc.

Yes, I did hold the on button down for a considerable time and did that several times both plugged in and not plugged in. There is no response of any kind. This is the second full day of charging and no luck.  I can imagine that it has run down to a point that the battery is defective and needs replacement. I have looked at many utube videos but I have not found one showing the replacement of this 10" ONN laptop. This is the one that does detach from the keyboard to become a tablet. I also tried the suggestion of rebooting with the keyboard detached. Has anyone opened the case successfully?  I see no screws so it must just pry open. I could try that tonight as nothing ventured, nothing gained. Right now it is useless. Any suggestions on opening?   Thanks again, Jim      KD1I

Hi,

I would just view a few Youtube videos on opening tablets.  I would expect most are the same with plastic locking tabs around the edges.  There was a video I just watched where a guy just ran a stiff clear plastic ruler around the edges and the back just popped off.  The main difficulty may be if it was glued anywhere.  In that case you need to run a hair dryer on it to soften the glue and just be patient with the pulling.  Probably the battery is glued in like this.

Grand-daughter had a Samsung tablet that wouldn't charge after running down the battery. The tablet would show the battery charge indication on the screen after plugging in the charger and then shut-down. I had to open the case and disconnect the screen to complete the charge.  Seems the screen was drawing too much current and was killing the charging circuit. A great design!
