I have searched all over the Net to find an answer to no avail.

Does anyone know what the threaded brass insert above the speaker mic pin holes is for on the FT-4X?

It would seem that a speaker mic plug would have a screw to match that holds it in securely, buy again
I can seem to find a speaker mic that has the screw flange. The SMA-17B etc do not have it.

Taking a S.W.A.G (Scientific Wild Assed Guess), it may be like what is found on Motorola handhelds and is used to lock the Speaker/Mic plug in place.

Correct. As I alluded to above. HOWEVER, I have found no accessory speaker mics that have that screw.

I would think that there would be one from Yaesu instead of their "rubber band" concept of holding the plug in firmly.

What is interesting is that Yaesu does not list a speaker mike with the locking feature on it's website.  Maybe they also market this basic design to military/police agencies in other countries where the locking feature would be desirable?

Got my answer from Yaesu engineering.

They were going to make a speaker mic with the screw flange, but it never came to be even after the brass insert was manufactured in the radio body.

Perhaps the speaker mics are made in China and the radios in Japan and they reading from the same page. ;D ;D
