Simple APRS Software
« on: January 27, 2022, 09:11:22 AM »

I've been out of APRS a while, and want to get back on from the home station. I've been searching for software, and more confused than ever. I'm looking for a basic program, and don't need a bunch of high detail maps. I used dosAPRS many years ago and was happy with that. Is there anything out there that's pretty simple and basic, and will run on a Windows 7 box?

I like ui-view simply because I've been running it for almost 20 years and it will run on win-7.
And you can build your own maps if you like.

YMMV

I have used UIView for years; it's a good program.  However, its' author, Roger Baker, G4IDE(SK), who is now Silent Key, directed all of the code for UIView be destroyed upon his death.  Thus, no updates can be made to the software.  Despite that, the program still functions nicely.

"UIView be destroyed upon his death."

I was his to do he sees fit but it seems odd to me
why he would want that??
Did he say why before he was a SK??  I would want to
pass it on for the next gen. of hams.  But, got to respect
his wishes.

Roger stopped taking registrations shortly before his death.  The software is now 'freeware'.  I'm not aware of his thinking as to not releasing the code even to a select development team.  He may have shared his thoughts with family and close friends, but this will remain one of life's mysteries.

Why do chef's or even just "Aunt Martha" take recopies to their graves? Because they don't want anyone else to have success with their recipe.  Plain and simple "if I can't have it and live forever then no one else is going to have it and claim it as theirs."  It is a form of attempted immortality, take it to the grave, and then maybe some one will remember me type of thinking. And if someone remembers me and thinks "boy oh boy, Aunt Martha's biscuits sure were the best" then Aunt Martha will "live forever". It is as simple and stupid and selfish as that.

See if APRSISCE will do what you want. The site seems to be offline at the moment but the mailing list is OK:

Here's the thing.  When all those who have known us make it to the grave we will no longer even be a memory.
