MFJ 1026 noise canceller
« on: January 29, 2022, 09:21:05 AM »

Has anyone had any luck using the MFJ 1026 to reduce or eliminate broadband noise on HF? I have S9 noise from 20 to 10 meters that is solid
and an intermittent S9 noise that lasts about 20sec and stops. Comes back in a couple of minutes. The noise is worse near the power lines at the
back of my house and I detect it on my dipole and vertical coaxial feedlines. I know the 1026 will null narrow band single signals, but haven't had
any luck with broadband noise. The noise blanker in my IC-7300 has no effect. I rf sniffed inside my house and found no hot spots.

You will have some success with a properly designed and placed NOISE anenna.  You haven't described your setup.  Is the broadband noise you are experiencing on 20m-10m coming from local powerlines or is it just atmospheric band noise?   I've found the 1026 works better on 40m and 80m with a randome length horizontal wire.  In my case 100 feet long, about 20 feet above ground, and 70 feet away from my main antenna which is a G5RV type wire up about 75 feet.  With this setup I could null an S9 noise down to an S3.  On 40m down to an S6.   Day and night makes a difference due to the angle of arrival of atmospherice noise at my location. On the higher bands, 30m through 10m,  I could not achive a null at all.  Again, these are the results I get only from phase cancelling atmospheric noise, not from powerline (pulse) interference.   I have had no success phase cancelling powerline noise when it occurs.

The noise is not atmospheric, but electronic hash (Steve? the jokester may chime in).  On the spectrum display it looks like atmospheric with no
defined peaks, but at a level of S9 to 10 over. I am using a Butternut HF6VX vertical on my one story roof with radials. This just started about two weeks ago and has pretty much made HF impossible to use. I live on a small lot,so there aren't many options. A tower is not possible due to power lines everywhere. Thanks for the reply.

While it might not fix the problem, have you tried a common mode choke at the base of the vertical and (if necessary) at the shack end of the feeder?

I suffer from wide band “hash”, particularly on 80m, it is in the form of a crackling sound that is present 24 hours a day in both dry and wet conditions. Some incorrectly say it is atmospheric, yet if I operate portable away from houses the band is completely clear of it.

I have both a vertically polarised active antenna (home brew one based on the PA0RDT) and a horizontal doublet. Plus an MFJ 1026. The ‘1026 doesn’t help much with the crackling noise, plus it is very fiddly to adjust. Rig noise blankers and rig noise reduction don’t help remove it either. The ‘1026 did completely remove noise from a nearby TV, but that neighbour moved and took the troublesome TV with them.

A small active loop antenna can help, but you will also null out wanted signals in 2 directions. I recently bought a Wellgood loop active antenna board and have it mounted in a waterproof box awaiting warmer weather to try it outside. It is similar to the original Wellbrook loop at a fraction of the cost.

I have owned an MFJ-1026 and was able to get rid of the dominant 80 meter noise source. This left another noise source 6 dB below it but was enough. A friend uses the MFJ-1026 and the Yantan QRM Eliminator X-Phase (a similar device) and likes them both. Amazon sells the Yantan for $62 and I am ordering one.
