Anyone do a Radio Install in a Honda Passport?
« on: February 01, 2022, 05:25:17 AM »

Hi all, I am considering a new Honda Passport and I wonder if anyone has done an install in one yet?  I suppose they'd be similar to the Pilot. I am looking for information on RFI, power cord feeding from the battery etc.  I am considering installing an HF radio, like a Icom 7300 0r similar.
Thanks!

I can't imagine where you would find enough room to mount an IC7300 in the Honda.  Maybe a Yaesu FT-891 with the remote mounting kit.  The control head on the dash and the chassis under a seat,?

Sadly a FT-891 isn't an answer to the question.   I installed my 7300 on the passenger seat with my Bioenno battery.

Joe,

I did an install in my 2009 Honda Ridgeline (very similar platform) and have had no issues with RFI, etc.  You can see some pics on QRZ.  I ran the power cable through a grommet in the firewall direct to the battery, and removed a few trim panels where needed to route the cables & coax through to the rear of the cab to keep it clean.  I did have to drill a small hole in the composite bed/liner to feed the cables outside, and used an aftermarket grommet to tidy it up when done.

Remote mounting definitely makes for a less bulky, nicer looking install, but I'm sure you could fit the 7300 in if you wanted to - where there's a will, and such...

Good luck with it, and show us some pics if you think of it once you're done!

I concur with W3FLH. It definitely CAN be done albeit with some careful planning and execution. My install was a 2013 Honda Pilot. I did however find this vehicle, and frankly all modern vehicles, to be rather RF noisy. The most bothersome in the Pilot is what I believe is a fuel pump driver module that generates harsh buzzing like RF hash right in the middle of the 2 meter band, but not continuously. Only when accelerating hard enough for the driver to call for more pressure, or flow, or whatever.  I have been able to quiet it down some using ferrite toroids on all wires in and out, but unable to totally eliminate it. I have not encountered the same issues at HF however. If you want a resource that contains more information and advise than you will probably ever need on the topic of mobile installations, see Alan Applegate’s excellent website KzeroBG.com
Good luck to you!

Thanks all.  I was concerned about any RFI that the vehicle may generate and KC1XT's post has alerted me to potential issues.  The purchase is a bit pf a ways away if you have been following new car prices and availability. But your posts have indicated that I really need to plan this out well. Thanks everyone for your input and I will try and document the install when it happens so that others can learn from it.
