Yaesu FT-7900R radios on ebay
« on: February 02, 2022, 08:38:09 AM »

Does anyone know about the Yaesu FT-7900R duobanders being offered up on ebay? Are they genuine Japanese manufactured radios or are they some kind of knockoff? I see that many of them are shipping from China.

A quick look at the Yeasu, HRO, and DXEngineering websites shows that they’re not for sale by reputable dealers.  I suspect that they’re seconds; radios that didn’t meet the specifications and Yaesu sold them as a group.  Or perhaps it was the end of a production run and Yaesu didn’t want to sell them any longer.  I doubt that they’re cheap knockoffs, but I would certainly be suspicious of them.

I had one many years ago and my only objection to it was that the deviation on 10 meters was set at 3 kHz or something like that.  It should have been set at 5 kHz.

It is also important to remember that E-Bay is not an electronics supply house.

The 7900 is a dual band 2 and 440 radio, the 8900 is the quad band radio you are thinking of.

I looked at these Ebay radios also and there isn't enough info to tell if the are B stock radios, which would be service center refurbished radios,  or where the they initially came from.

The only complaint I have with my 7900 is the speaker is not very good, which is typical of most ham products, so I use a small midland land mobile speaker that is considerably better and makes the radio a pleasure to use.

I used to use mine a lot to listen to the US military FM satellites in the 250 to 270 MHz band which at the time was populated by Brazilian pirates using them to talk from the Amazon to other areas of Brazil.

Probably "last-of-stock", as Yaesu is phasing out ft7900 and is pushing c4fm in the USA market.  I'd bet they are "grey market" and do not come with the 3 year warrenty... probably 90 days only.
And maybe optioned for region 1 or 3 markets too that use lower deviation settings.
The "control operator" (read that as YOU) is responsible for proper functioning and operation.
Got any test eqpt?

Thanks for the replies. I will now look for a real used Yaesu 7800 or 7900.
