can anyone recommend a free basic logging program
« on: February 06, 2022, 10:22:18 AM »

I'm hoping to find a free basic logging program for just casual use (I've tried N1MM but cant seem to get everything correct about it) The only requirement is that it will allow me to convert and send an ADIF file of the results. Thanks for any suggestions

I have using N3FJP logging sofware since 2004 and it very user friendly.  Plus you have selection of different contest and QSO parties.

I have also used N3FJP and think it's great. Not free, but very reasonable.
You should check the product reviews section and look for logging software. There are several free offerings with associated reviews.

I use Log4OM and it is an excellent general purpose logging program. I'm not a heavy duty contest operator - Log4OM meets my contesting needs, but I have heard some serious contest operators criticise it...

I would also endorse the N3FJP software series.  They have a 'general' logging program and a series of contest specific programs.

I also use N3FJP logging software, the best IMO but not free. For "free" a very popular software is N1MM which I've used years ago.

I've been using N1MM for many years now with no problems. I'm satisfied with its basic functions.

N1MM is as easy or as complex as you need it to be.

Because of how many people use it, there are plenty of knowledgeable users that can and do help on the groups.io reflector.  Many of the programmers also answer questions.

NX0E, I agree about paper but 2 contests I'd like to enter require electronic ADIF submissions. I've looked at all suggestions and thank each of you for your responses, the only 1 that seems to have my specific contests supported is N1MM, I'll try the forum and see if I can't make it work.

Again, thanks for everyone's help

Paper is ok if you are not a very serious contest operator but if you are the kind who will sit at the rig for the duration of the contest and work a significant number of stations it does become increasingly difficult to keep track of who you have worked and avoid complaints of "worked before"! Even the most basic electronic logging program will allow you to key in a callsign and tell you when you last worked it. It will also offer you sorted, searchable lists of contacts to help you check...

When I was a young ham, before PCs had been invented, I was a member of a very active contest club. When we took part in a big contest like Field Day, we would maintain a card index of worked stations and there would be a third operator present at all times who was responsible for keeping the index up to date and informing the guy at the mic or key if he was about to call a station that we had worked before.

I have used N3FJP for general logging and most contests since 2006. I'm using it right now in the CQ WPX RTTY 'test.

I used N1MM for awhile until it and the FTdx-10 decided they were no longer going to work together after each updated so I will try interfacing N3FJP to the radio for the ARRL DX 'test next weekend.

I have used N1MM+  as a general logger and also as a contest logger for many years. As said it can be as complex or as simple as you need it to be.

If you cannot make it work for you, I would be happy to go over it with you and do screen shares and telephone consultation.  Let me know and we can swap cell numbers and I bet we can make it work for you.
