I sometimes do the same thing for fun. Just put in a lowball bid on an item that might be fun to have, but won't break my heart if I don't get it.
Cheap entertainment. :-)

On a related topic.
One Ebay thing I don't like is the "secret" reserve price.
It's very aggravating to be the only bidder on an item, with a pretty high upper limit, and not to "win" because the bidding didn't reach the reserve. In my opinion the "secret" reserve price really discourages bidding.

If the seller has a firm low limit, just make it the opening price.

I simply set my max bid at what I am willing to pay. If I win, great. If I don't, I didn't lose anything.

I have noticed that some people will keep bidding just for the sake of winning. Usually pay too much when they do that. But it is the same in live auctions as well. See people lose their minds trying to win and forget that each time they bid the price is rising. Hilarius to see their face when the auctioneer says sold and they realize how much they bid.

At in-person and online auctions I have seen used items go for more than new prices for just that reason. Crazy!

Same here. I've been surprised a couple times lately and ended up with a couple nice little items. That's not always the case.

So our basement vintage radio "junk collections" look like a better and better investment every day!

I'm always amazed at the starting or buy it now price for an item of ham radio gear that is higher than the price for the item new.  You would think the buyer would do their homework...don't count on it.  The observation that some folks get caught up in the bidding war and pay too much for an item is also valid.

wife and I would sometimes go to a friday night public auction, 1 night they had several 6-packs of new screwdrivers (still sealed) high bid was $4, the auctioneer asked the high bidder how many packs he wanted, then offered them to the next highest bidder at the same price, and then offered them to anyone who wanted some. As there were still several left over, the auctioneer said "lets run them thru again", the 2nd time the same screwdrivers sold for $5. Amazing

Some like to gamble on a lower price in the second round. Sometimes you get burned doing that.

Probably the same set of screwdrivers they give you for FREE at Harbor Freight just for buying anything!

I've been known to chase the slealthy machine on something I need or want, but usually if it goes past what I think it's worth, I let the other guy(s) go nuts. sometimes I gasp at how the gambling frenzy pushes things to awesome silly pricing. that's what I think it is, this slot machine has got to pay out NOW.

I use auction sniper, set what I'm willing to pay and it lets me know if I won or not. It won't go to your max, it just increments up and if you get it below your max it's great, if not, Oh, weller.

Save the final, virgin WRTH and one day sell on eBay.

Amazes me of the descriptions used on eBay. Mint. Then the description goes onto to state "lightly used".
