Tuning range of AN/ARC-5 Capacitor
« on: February 21, 2022, 12:42:01 PM »

Can anyone tell me the tuning range of an AN/ARC tuning capacitor taken from the rear of an AN/ARC5 transmitter or receiver? Sorry, I don't know which model but if necessary can count the number of rotor or stator plates.
Thanks.

A variable capacitor has a "tuning range" that is determined by it's value and the value of the inductor and other components in the resonant circuit it is part of.   For you to be able to use this in another circuit, what you really want to know is:

The minimum and maximum capacitance
The voltage rating
Whether the rotor is insulated from the frame

The question is very non specific. Try thinking about what you are trying to accomplish and ask the question within that context.
Also, there are no tuning caps in the REAR of those radios.
The transmitter's caps are underneath the chassis and receivers tuning gang is in the top front!

I just dug one out of the attic, and it has "30 - 150" marked in
pencil on the side, which I assume is the capacitance range
in pF.  It has 11 moveable plates.

IIRC this came from one of the "fixed" VFO capacitors, that
was adjusted during alignment, then locked in place.  It has
only a very short stub of a tuning shaft, enough for the
shaft lock, but not quite enough for a comfortable knob.

I use an LCR meter I picked up on eBay, see link below. It has worked great to determine the value of capacitors, both variable and fixed and inductor values. That LCR meter would come in handy to determine the value of the variable capacitor you are referring to.

Here you go. http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/electric/pplate.html
Calculator will do most of the math for you.
All you need is a measuring stick and a bit of knowledge about Pi.
