Swan Mk1 Linear
« on: February 23, 2022, 08:34:12 AM »

I know this used 3-400Z tubes.  Does anyone know if 3-500Z tubes can be used, or are they physically too tall to fit the box?

I have a MkII and use 3-500s with the low profile plate caps, works great.... I think the cabinets are identical.

Mni tnx. I'll see if there are any other replies...

Maybe bigger problem is no tuned input, which some SS rigs might object to....

You should read up on the differences between the 3-400 and 3-500 tubes. The tubes are different.

The big difference is the height. The 3-500Z has slightly lower amplification factor (160 as against 200):  with the same filament as the 4-250, 4-400 and 3-400, the peak cathode currents will be the same.  At a pinch, a 4-400 can be substituted if the extra height isn't a problem- which in the case  of the Swan it almost certainly is.
