Larsen Mag Mount and A Diamond Antenna SG7500NMO
« on: March 06, 2022, 06:36:01 PM »

Hi Everyone,

Will this combination work [stay on the top of the pickup cab at California freeway speeds(!)] My 2003 Tacoma P/U is a loaned vehicle, temporarily. I'd like to use the antenna on the cab's top and not worry about the mag/antenna flying off at 65 MPH...

Many thanks for taking the time to respond.

I have used Larson mag mounts in the past and never had problems, even driving across the country at freeway speeds. I now use them for event APRS trakers.

Hi,

I am using a Comet SBB-224 (tri band with size and profile similar to the SG-7500) with a Larsen mag mount.  This has been working quite well.  It has been blown off the roof but only 2 or 3 times in 2 years and a couple of tip overs.  "Freeway speed" with a brisk headwind or wind from either front quarter will do it.  I have had many more tip overs and a few 'off the roof' incidents due to overhead obstructions.

This size antenna seems to be the largest that this mag mount can handle.

You don't specify the size of the antenna or the diameter of the magnetic mount.
A 5 inch magnet and a dual band 2/440 antenna about 36 " will hang on well beyond 90 mph.
My Larson mount is on an Alum cab Ford F150 between the rear light and cab.
The mag hangs on so well I have to slide it off the mount to get it free.
Only other way is to invest in a three mag base mount.
Your antenna is also 36"+/-.
