Yaesu 818 morse on FM?
« on: March 08, 2022, 04:31:48 PM »

Hi, I am learning morse and have set up my paddle on my Yaesu 818. I will be having lessons on 2M FM. The paddle works fine in CW mode, but not on FM? Am I doing something wrong, or is that the way that this radio works? I have looked through the manual, and I'm none the wiser.

Normal CW is considered A1 modulation. It simply turns the carrier on and off. What you would need to do morse code on FM is called A2 modulation or sometimes more loosely MCW (modulated continuous wave). The 818 is not capable of A2 operation without some additional equipment. When we used to hold CW training sessions on 2 meters FM simplex, most used a standalone keyer and simply held or propped the mic up to its speaker when it was their turn to send. That qualifies as A2 modulation.

I've never heard of a FM rig that was set up to do modulated CW by the manufacturer.

F2A   Morse telegraphy by on – off keying of frequency - modulating audio frequency.

F2A is the emission designator of on/off audio keying through an FM transmitter.

I guess saying dah-dit-dah-dit into the microphone is out of the question.

The small Yaesu rigs (e.g. Ft-857D) can do it, but they are multi-band multi-mode rigs. It's fun to send code through the local 2 meter repeaters.

I just looked at the FT-857D manual and only found a cumbersome way of entering your call for a CW ID while operating 2M FM.
No information that I see that the keyer works for sending modulated CW while in the FM mode.
The keyer would certainly be useful for practicing Morse code at higher speeds.
There have been a few articles about homebrewing something and perhaps a commercial product or two but that doesn't answer the OP's question.

Thanks for the replies folks. I do have a keyer that I built from a kit. I can use that whilst keying the mic. It would be nice to be able to use the inbuilt keyer in the rig on FM though.

The keyer would need to key an audio tone that goes into the microphone jack.

In theory, many radios now have enough software capability to add that feature.

I have an old FT290 that changed frequencies as you changed modes.  It wouldn't remember the exact CW frequency to return to if you  switched to another mode.

See Page 100, Menu No-022
When ON the KEY jack is enabled on all modes (SSB mode: A1, FM mode: F2).
I believe this also works on AM but I have not tried it on AM.

Thanks, it is good to know the FT857D can be used to send F2 or modulated CW by changing the menus.

I looked but didn't see anything like that in the FT818 manual.

To avoid any confusion, the Yaesu FT818nd does have an inbuilt keyer, which can be used in practise mode (not transmitting) but again, only in CW and CWR modes.

The Yaesu FT-897D will send Morse tones on FM by design. The FT-818ND is a mini-897 but with a few of its features missing. I’m not sure the 818 can do it natively though.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had a look through the manual for the FT-897D. The FT-897D has a “CW Auto” option on menu item 22. This is what enables or disables CW on the other modes. The FT 818nd doesn’t have this option. Shame really.
