contest operation?
« on: March 27, 2022, 08:09:20 AM »

Is there a reason that some stations operate in the advance class parts of the bands? It would seem that operating in the General class portion would garner more contacts. No disrespect to upper class license holders.

Operating in the general portion of bands generally increases the number of US stations that could call you, since about 1/2 of US hams (not counting technician) have General licenses. But, in contests the band fills up quickly and often the only places left to call CQ are in the Advanced or Extra segments.

Seems like a lot more Advanced/Extra hams are more active in contesting compared to General hams, so that offsets the issue a bit.

AND contests that are world wide even if you operate in the Extra/Advanced class portions, even then you may not be able to reach all that you would want, because many other countries phone bands go lower than they do here in the USA. Remember contests are not just for US participants, most are worldwide. Sticking to the general class portions of the bands would be very counterproductive. It is best to get your Extra and enjoy life.   :)
