Coronavirus Funds
« on: March 28, 2022, 11:10:57 AM »

Here is a little background on what I am asking about, “WHEREAS, on March 11, 2021, the American Rescue Plan Act was signed into law, and established the Coronavirus State Fiscal Recovery Fund and Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, which together make up the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (“SLFRF”) program,”
I have been watching towns, villages and townships locally using the above funds for all type of new purchases. Most of these purchases (99%)  I don’t have any idea how in their wildest dreams they have anything to do with corona!
Have any amateur radio clubs received any of these funds? If so what was the connecting bridge to corona?

Thanks

Have also been reading the articles about the fraud in the use of these funds.  Apparently, not much of a justification exists to obtain these funds.  Assuming justification was required what would that consist of on the part of an amateur radio club?

I'm not sure the purpose of the question other than to stir the political cesspool.

Well, let's make sure that it doesn't devolve!

Nothing wrong with this question but it has the possibility of opening up a hornet's nest. It does not take much fuel to start an argument these days. Our hobby will benefit by leaving politics out of it.

I think this is a question better posed to your local officials or to a local newspaper rather than a Ham radio forum!

You haven't really stated what you think could justify an amateur radio club receiving any of these funds.  Maybe a comparison of the other entities justifications vs amateur radio would yield some answers.

Grumpy - my take on this post is that the OP is simply inquiring how it might be possible for his Club to receive and benefit from some of these funds..

Our EMA director mentioned one possible way for the radio club to receive funds. He said if we listed the emergency communications trailer as a mobile testing/vaccine trailer funds might be available. The members nixed that idea because we did not want a bunch of people walking thru our trailer and the club does not own a pickup truck. We have three drivers who rotate with their trucks if the trailer needs to go out. We were looking to find money for more radio equipment and was trying to find a way to link with the available covid funds. I in NO way meant to start a political free for all!

And if that information were to be put on an official application for government funds there would be no fraud involved?

IF we took the money and did NOT offer the service sure fraud would be involved BUT as I clearly stated, unless you do not have a grasp of the English language, we will NOT be asking for funds for that purpose. I clearly said two reasons why we were not interested in that. 1. We do not want a bunch of people roaming in and out of the trailer. 2. The club does not own a pickup truck.

Our ARES group got a couple of small grants, but not from Covid relief. It was through Homeland Security and was for specific projects for our county EOC. It fit under some funding set up for emergency communications updating/maintenance. So, if you can keep your eyes open searching, you may find an appropriate grant program to help. In our case, it helped having our Emergency Government office help write and support our efforts.

Also, a letter to your congressman and senator may produce some possibilities depending how competent their staff is.

Just don't ask for an FBI tactical communications vehicle! Just joking...

Ah! But your ARES group had to sell their collective souls to HSA!
Did you ever read that Document they want you to sign? No thanks!

LAst time I checked, there is also mandatory training involved as well. In effect, you are then like a para signal corps supporting Americas KGB.

After it's all said and done, the county doesn't give ARES the time of day in emergency situations here anyway.
It's "standby, the professionals have this under control"

In our county, ARES is written into the EAP and we have our dedicated stations in the comm center.

The ARES club has an area in Ecomm center as well. However, they have NEVER been called on to participate in a REAL emergency.
Perhaps if there is a SHTF event like Ukraine , maybe. It says  that the HSA can "deploy" your butt in the document you signed.
