probationary period for membership?
« on: December 06, 2022, 02:37:32 PM »

The local club here has gone to requiring a 6-month probationary period for membership; i.e. pay dues in January, get accepted as a full member in July (I think).  Has anyone ever heard of this elsewhere?

Never heard of something like that.  It doesn't seem like a good idea, considering how few hams there are left in the country.  Maybe they don't want to expand their membership.

I haven't had anything to do with our local club since about 1983......they're way too snobby and clickish.

It falls under "it's their ball...their rules".

If the dues aren't exorbitant, pay and see how it goes.

I assume you have gone to a number of meetings and want to join this club over others?

If you don’t get accepted do they just tell you to get lost or what ?

How about recognizing someone who comes out to meetings 6 times - like a bonus for participating! We need all the hams we can get. Make people feel welcome!

Agree with above. You want to make people feel welcome.

Sounds like a holdover from bygone days when some clubs wanted to see if you were serious about participating.

I don't think a "probationary" period is common in most clubs. But after a disastrous episode with one of our clubs former members, I can see where it could be useful.

Has the club said what would constitute a reason for cancelling someone's membership after six months? Or, to put it another way, what would the probationary member have to do to be accepted as a full member after the probationary period?

That's curious - "has gone to", implying a recent change.  Given participation in clubs in general these days it would seem this "exclusivity" isn't about restricting membership but mitigating what a new/full member might do.  Like maybe a few ne're do wells become members and try to overtake the board or something, and probation period allows tossing out undesirables (whatever that looks like) before they can cause trouble.  If it's one thing I've seen in ham clubs over the years it's personality conflicts.

Most clubs should pay you for attending.

We have it at the fire hall because it is very expensive to get the proper gear in the correct size.
The probationary period serves multiple purposes.
Work issues aside (leeway is given for those at work)
But not showing up or skipping town after being issued gear worth up to 5 grand or more is a bit hard to bear.
The second purpose is to provide the training time.
If a candidate is serious about it, the will take advantage of the training availability.

In a radio club, well that depends on what they are hoping to achieve.
Our club meetings are open to the public and we Have actually had HOA officials present
We offer assistance in solving many problems outside of amateur radio and educate them  in the benefits of it.

Anyhow the secretary and president interview candidates and bring the application to the following meeting.
So our probationary period is 1 month.
But as stated above its their choice and their rules.

Since joining our club our secretary and her husband have become my unofficial grandparents.
I've started recording the meeting minutes with a laptop and podcast mic. And saving them as mp3 files for her.
That way she has a record of the meetings.

We have a great group who are always on the lookout to help each other with gear or education.
