I would recommend the Icom 7100 which covers 160-6 M with up to 100 watts, 2 M with 50 watts, and 70 cm with 35 watts. It has the most 70 cm output power of all the compact rigs. I use mine with an adapter to a Yaesu ATAS 100 screwdriver antenna that covers 40 M to 70 cm. The newest version is the ATAS 120. The cost of both is well under $1,500.

To avoid the adapter box, Yaesu FT100D's, 857D's, 897D's, etc. all interface directly with the ATAS100/120 but they are all out of production and have 20 watts output on 70 cm rather than the 7100's 35 watts.

I owned the 897D which typically sells used for $500-700 depending on options. It has an option for a DC power pack that goes inside the radio itself so it is truly portable. When running off the internal DC battery, its power output is limited to 20 watts.
